My first FD
 

Hello rx7club!


I just purchased my first RX-7 less than a month ago. She's sweet: an MB that doesnt look GREEN most of the reliability mods done (downpipe, catback, AST, intercooler, radiator, pfc, water temp & boost gauges). Low miles, new engine, and tuned by Mr. Kan @ 12psi.

I've been doing my best to drive it like I've owned one before: no boost until operating temp, no boost two minutes before my destination, driving with P lights for the fans, opening the hood after arriving to let some of that built up heat escape (and DAMN, this car IS hot)...


Now mind you, I'm 19. This is my 5th car, and it's been my dream since I was much younger. I am NOT going to be the typical teenage RX-7 owner drifting and boosting all over the place. I've No accidents, no tickets(moving violations at least). Like I said, this is my dream car, and I really don't want to ruin it, or myself----and I'd like to prove to the more 'mature' owners that a teenager can be just as good as them! (or better :lol: )


Also, I'll make it clear that besides oil changes and minor tune ups, I haven't done much under the hood of a car. I plan on doing some misc. stuff this weekend---oil change(bought my 12 pack idemitsu, plan on K&N filter), antenna mast replacement, kaixen HIDs, and as far as somewhat gritty work: I want to install the FC thermoswitch--just got it in the mail from Ray.



SO, here's newb question (number 1,000,001)

What is the exact name of the 'Thermoswitch' in the parts diagram manual?

I wanted to refrain asking where it the switch is located exactly, because I'd like to get used to using the manual---I plan on doing as much to the car myself as I can.



I know this isn't the best car to jump into mechanically wise...but I'm a fast learner, and I am determined to understand the ins and outs of my car.

I may be new to the car, but I am not new to the forums--I've done lots and lots of reading over the past few YEARS around here...because I wanted to make sure I did everything correctly once I finally got my own. I'll be doing a full wash and wax (any recommendations as far as wax goes? something I could find at autozone or pep boys) sunday, so I'll be sure to take some pictures!!

congrats and welcome, make sure to treat your car with some respect and remeber that this car is no toy....you can jurt yourself with it....

+1 - you seem to of read a bit so thats good to see! Good luck! And please be very careful... as KaiFD3S said, respect the car... Some pictures would be good too.

Seems you have it pretty well sorted for starters.


As for wash and wax, I'd go with Meguiar's Gold Class. You can get it at any random car place and it isn't half bad. In the long run you may wish to look into getting some Menzerna products. Top notch imo.


Also, you may save a bit of money by just going with your standard FRAM filter (not much of a difference besides the name) and Mobile 1 Full synth. Should save you some decent change and is just as good :)

What do you mean "thermoswitch" ? Are you talking about the theromstat? or you talking about the fan relay switch? I'm guessing you're talkinga bout the thermostat...but wasn't sure. If so, it's page E-14.

I'm pretty sure he means the Fan Relay Switch. There is a thread by DaleClark on how to replace it.

Awesome, yeah I'd love to get in on some meets. Gave the car some good wax coats last night, never saw her look so good (I used Mother's, worked pretty well, dries quickly). I'm located in LA (the real LA)---and ALL of the FD's i've seen aroun here are........not in the best shape heh. What's coming up in the next couple of weeks?

And yeah, I did mean fan relay switch--the little sensor that kicks your fans on at XX temperature, thanks for that thread link! just what I needed

Good to see another young FD owner in so cal. Take care of it well. If you need any advice/help maintaining the paint on it let me know.

I recommend Menzerna/autoglym. There are a few other companies i like to use as well.

congratulations on earning your dream car! its a great feelin aint it to finally get something that was only intangible before? either way its a beautiful car, so take good care of it and dont let anybody else drive it. you sound like you're responsible, but as a friendly reminder dont let the car drive you in the end. enjoy your FD and welcome to the club :)

I wonder if you got the name of your switch yet. lol. I saw someone mention the fan relay switch. But your question is kinda vague. I was originally think the thermostat lol. Congratulations on your purchase by the way. I also bought my first FD and waiting for it to arrive since it was imported from Japan lol. It's nice to know that you're taking good care of your car. But some of the things you're doing is not neccessary I think. Opening the hood seems to be a bit excessive to cool the car down. You should only have to idle the car for about 10-12 minutes after you arrive at your destination to cool down your turbos(this also eliminates the obligation to "no boost before destination") However, this is still very troublesome. I suggest you get a turbo timer. It automatically idles your car for you after you turn off the key and shuts it down after a certain time. And you know that you will never forget to idle your car with it =P

the thread Seventh Heaven posted was what I was looking for--got the switch installed on sunday along with my antenna--didn't have enough time for the kaixens :(, and for whatever reason the drain plugs on the oil pan just would not budge at all, going to bite the bullet and let jiffy lube take care of em.. eheh

If a box end wrench wont work then use a 6point socket. it offers less chances of rounding off the bolt.
