Might trade rx-8 for 93 TT

A friend told me about a FD for sale at a used dealership a few miles up the road and I went to check it out but it was closed, but from I could tell it as a stock FD and it had a sign on it that said *Twin Turbo*..I'm going tomorrow to check it out and hopefully get a test-drive out of it. The body seemed to be in great condition and what I could tell from interior it was tan leather and looked pretty nice, unfortunatly the windows were kind of tinted so I couldn't really tell..can't wait till tomorrow though. It's Nordic Green with tan interior and is for sale for 14,900.

`sl!mXP 01-25-05 07:23 PM

go for it!!

Your giving up a lot of comforts but you will be getting uncanny performance gains :D

VelociRedBeast 01-25-05 07:28 PM

What are the exact specs on a stock 93 TT?

GoodfellaFD3S 01-25-05 07:33 PM

You prolly mean Montego Blue. No such thing as nordic green on an FD.

specs? 255hp/217t, high 13s at 100 mph in 1/4, the R1s pulled 1g.

Make sure it's a 5 spd or don't buy.

VelociRedBeast 01-25-05 07:35 PM

It is 5spd, and I just know the color is the dark green, definatly not blue..

David88vert 01-25-05 07:37 PM

While I like the FD, I would rather trade my FD for a RX8 (even automatic) if I could. It's just a newer car. That FD is over 10 years old.

gambit023 01-25-05 07:38 PM

255hp stock. stating that it has a tan interior seems to be like a touring model. if it's a touring you'll have one oil cooler instead of two and a smaller front lip. Tournings also have sun roof, cruse control, and rear wiper. Also the 93's had that interior plastic problem 94's and 95's didn't.

beware.. make sure you do your home work before picking it up. 3rd gens usually leak oil from the oil pan after a few years due to its motor mount design. Make sure the coolant seals are good (e.g. gurgling coolant out of the overflow tank). make sure the twins hit the proper boost 8-10-8 (if stock). There's a bunch more to look out for but i'm sure others on the board can chip in also.

if you're looking for performance and all out handling .. the 3rd gen is for you.. but if you're looking for a cruiser... shit i would stick with the rx8. just my opinion.

WanKeL FD RX-7 01-25-05 07:38 PM

montego blue looks like forrest green mixed with navy blue, it has a really nice colour !!! Unless you know a lot about rotaries or you want to learn about them, i wouldn't exchange a rx8 with a warranty for a FD.

But it's a better car... i mean the rx-7..

gambit023 01-25-05 07:40 PM

Dude, it's probably a motego blue like GoodFella stated. That color will good green in the day time and blue at night. but, i could be wrong.. it may have been repainted.

Isnt it 10-8-10?

A lot of valid points were made though, you gotta understand what your getting into. A traded a 2004 Tiburon GT for my RX7 - its kind of a shock all the stuff you will go through that you dont have to deal with with a new car. You have to check for all sorts of things and be prepared to deal with problems you wouldnt expect with a new car :( [my advice - check EVERYTHING, make sure the wiring harness is good, get a compression check, boost check, inside, make sure the sunroof and wiper motors work well, be htorough!!]

VelociRedBeast 01-25-05 08:10 PM

Ya I printed out EVERYTHINg from the Voodoobox.net site to take tomorrow and I'll make sure I check everything listed..All 10 pages of it..

Yup.

Compilez 01-25-05 08:51 PM

Unless you have a daily driver/backup car for when the car is down, I would rethink your trade... If you don't then you might want to keep the 8 with the warranty... The 7 has lots of quirks.

Compilez 01-25-05 08:54 PM

There is also A LOT of things you need to need to know about this car before you consider buying it.

exactly... I wouldn't rush into this. If after a lot of research (aka time) and a test drive or two you still want the FD, then go for it. this isn't the type of car you should buy on an impulse just because you saw one for sale down the street. you should really hold out for the perfect one, a used fd may be a true lemon if you do not know what to watch out for.

shit, you already have a new, clean RX8 - just enjoy it :).

sicminded 01-25-05 09:03 PM

i'm assuming your considering the rx-7 over your rx-8 for the performance differences. have you considered putting a greddy turbo kit, or something similar, to bump up the power on your rx-8?

chris

chris

your right,

Well only one or two people at Rx8club.com have the greddy turbo and it produces 60 more HP which is nice but it's still no fd, and number two if you saw my sig you would know I own an auto..and well..we have no turbo or supercharger kits..and if we DID it would cost 3k-6k..I don't have that kind of money, I'm selling my system in my car now and I'm looking for about $350 so if I sell that I would be able to maybe buy an intake for my car which will produce,, ohhh about 2-3hp..plus I love Rx-7s which is one of the reason I got the 8. But I understand what you guys are saying, I printed out the 10 page voodoo tips on buying a 93 FD and I'm taking it with me to the dealership, I'm going to ask the dealer EVERYTHING and the site gave a number for mazda which I can call for a VIN check to see if it was taking back for all recalls and if it has ever been taken back for warranty work etc. and when I roll up in my 8 I'm usre he'll be beggingf me to test-drive the FD, and I will give it hell to check the over-heating, funky noises or vibrations. etc.

Anything else I should look out for? that's not in those tips?

alberto_mg 01-25-05 09:31 PM

i would never buy an FD from a dealership. if i can't talk to the owner and judge how the car was treated, maintained and driven, i ain't buying.

WolfpackFD3S 01-25-05 09:31 PM

Find out how many miles are on the engine and tranny. If they are a little high, figure in a rebuild or reman, so like $2-5k. Sometimes the tranny will go out at relatively low mileage, mine has 60k original miles on the tranny and it is going strong but the rebuilt engine that was in the car when i bought it was a piece of shit so I had to get a new engine. Definitely research a ton before rushing into anything. When buying an FD figure that it actually costs 175% of its listed price so that you have money for repairs and such. Good luck.

3 things....

1) Compression check
2) Compression check
3) Compression check

7apex7 01-25-05 10:15 PM

you are making a big mistake. you're trading a brand new car for a 10yr old car that will give you problems. sure the performance is there, but how are you going to feel with a car that is less reliable and HAS NO WARRANTY. you will kick yourself in a few years when you see the true cost of fd ownserhip. current fd owners know this already, and they either keep them and pay $$ or sell them out of frustation.

And also, if i was in your shoes i would do it. Just remember to keep researching the rx7 even after you get it.

Good luck.

speeddemon7 01-25-05 11:19 PM

for 15 grand it had better have less than a hundred grand on the odometer and also a rebuilt engine in it.Knowing what I know now I would never have bought an auto 3rd gen. Most important things to know are the mileage on the engine and turbos, was the car ever overheated? does it have the silicone vacuum job done? borrow a boost gauge from a friend if possible to check for the correct boost pattern, 10 psi by 3000 rpms then a dip to 8 psi at 4500 and then back up to 10 psi shortly thereafter. If it doesnt you will have a bitch of a time finding your sequential hell problem.
Also figure in costs for suspension work as well since the car is riding on a 10 year old suspension.NOt to mention figure in the cost of a daily driver/beater.
Your car will be down more than once for an extended period of time.Almost all fd owners have experienced this at some point of ownership.

No offence, but go look at some of his other posts on this forum before making comments like this. He is NOT the kind of person to repersent the younger age group. If I remember correctly one of his threads was "Racer or Ricer" for his Auto-8. https://www.rx7club.com/old-school-other-rotary-63/racer-ricer-350309/

His is not ready for this car if he can't afford 3k in maintence at any given time since it will be his main car. Hell I don't think he even knows that all FD's came from the factory with "twin-turbos"(in relation to his first post). If he gets it, we are soon to see another thread about one wrapped around a tree. This car is, plain and simple, too much car for 98% of the people his age.

VelociRedBeast 01-26-05 08:25 AM

Well even though it doesn't have anything to do with this thread, it's actually the same problem, There is no performance(Racer) but some nice looks (Ricer) and as I stated in that other thread racer and Ricer was just a figure of speech I didn't mean it literally. And yes I did know the FD comes stock TT, and you probobly thought Rx-8s come factory with 210 hp. I am asking for your advice so the only part of your post of *opinions* that I was looking for is

Actually I probably know the RX8 better than you do, but my girlfriend owns a 6speed-8.

Wait, isn't this your parents car?

I had actually posted something useful in my above post in an edit and it never got saved. But I feel like it's my duty to tell you a little bit along with all the other people on here that own FDs.

Alot of the newbs will say "Go For It Dude!" Because they have not had thier share of problems......yet!

Thing is, the 8 you have now is a solid reliable car that you can get to class in and still manage to impress most any college chick. And it will probably be maintenance free for quite some time....

The FD is a really really nice car. Many of the forum members daily drive their FDs...They either have a lot of expendable income that they can spend at the drop of a hat when the car breaks...And belive me, It will. If they own the car and daily drive it, then chances are they are very well mechanically enclined and do most or all of the work themself. Even then it still becomes expensive...Being a car that is no longer in production, parts tend to be a little bit more pricey than the norm.

So you need to consider this seriously, are you willing AND able to spend tons of hours with the car in the shop and able to drop $1100 tomorrow morning when your downpipe is clogged and causing overheating? I know, it doesn't cost $1100 to replace it but in my case it did. I had a mech replace my DP and while taking the stocker off a stud broke....So with labour and the cost of the DP, i'm out 1100 in less than 2 days. So you need to consider that.

OR, you drive to class and then bust your ass on a test...Go back out to the parking lot and see a pool of coolant under the right front side of your car. Yeah! your coolant seals are gone! So now you are out Minimum $2500 for a reman...and that's pulling and reinstalling the motor yourself. So like stated above, you might want to seriously consider what you are doing. Actually, maybe you can't because when I was 17 I didn't seriously consider shit. I know the FD is hot and you want it. But it can be your worst enemy if you don't treat it right. and to treat it right you need some extra funds. If you don't have 3k sitting around between the sofa cushions then don't do it. And that's about what it will cost to take care of your reliability mods.

Also, 15k on stock MB is a bit much unless it has 40k on the odometer. I spent 17.5k 3 years ago on a stock pristine 94 Silver R2. Honestly, I wouldn't do that again. Make sure that any FD you buy that is over 13k has rebuilt motor and turbos with low miles.....Any stock FD you buy with the original motor and turbos with over 75k miles on them...I guarantee the motor is on the way out.

i know people hate the MB but i paid alot more than that for mine with 32k on it this year and people have made fun of me for that but i've not had anything break down, fall off, anything like that. its my DD and its good for the go :D everything comes down to condition condition condition.

but that's just my $.02 and i'm still a newb (only had the car for a year... holy crap its been a year already).

WolfpackFD3S 01-26-05 09:12 AM

Even though I am still a newb here I must say maturity has a lot to do with owner this car. You have to be able to realize and accept that it WILL cost a lot of money, time, and frustration. It will also provide a lot of fun for the owner, but you have to be careful about this as well. If you want the car so you can race your buddies thats not a good reason to buy the car. The age arguement, while true in some cases, doesn't always apply. I am only 19 but I am sure I am more mature than a lot of people that are my age and a little older, losing your parents to a drunk driver when you are 18 will do that to you. I hope you are mature enough to make a good decision, if you decide to get the 7 good luck to you bro and be safe.

I am surprised he didn't charge you more for the AST install since that thing is such a bitch to replace ;) Good price tho. I'm sure Peter Farel didn't charge you that price. Sounds like a hookup job to me. Either way, good price on labor.

:D well, i suppose it pays to have a few connections here and there ;)

USCmatt 01-26-05 10:14 AM

Why would you even think about buying a 12 year old car, with known reliability issues, for 15k.............from a used car dealer???

Stick with the 8, you are 17 and have already wondered whether you should go with racer or ricer. If you do buy this stock MB FD, are you going to ask the same question?

fastcarfreak 01-26-05 10:33 AM

Stick with the 8. Owning an rx7 is a love/hate relationship. The line between them is very very very thin.

On another note, you said you got your rx8 bought for you because you got a bunch of scholarships to schools around Florida. Bro, you didnt earn it, you are just spoiled (like a lot of teenagers with wealthy parents). What you did earn by getting scholarships to schools around Florida, is a chance at a good education (if thats possible in Florida, hehe, sorry) and a chance to do something with your life rather then working at a low paying manual labor job that most of Americans hate so much. And that is definately something to be proud of man. Good luck regardless, and dont crash either of the cars.
Adam

USCmatt 01-26-05 10:38 AM

since you got into reading the 10 pages from the voodoo site, you should read these 13 pages too...

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/another-stupid-16-year-old-368567/

But if you did get the FD and did exactly what that kid did, then that would be one less car Railgun would have to add to the registry.

VelociRedBeast 01-26-05 11:15 AM

Most of you are saying it will cost me, I understand this and I took a secon dlook on the car this before classes and it has aftermarket tires, I checked the body completely with no paint blemishes and the interior looks BRAND NEW. I asked the guy for a quick history and he said it has gotten all it's recalls and inspections and every 3,000 and 15,000 miles maintnance and he has the proof. I told him I will be back after school to check the engine myself and test drive it.

and that comment about florida schools..obviously you don't know much about schools or else you will know that UF is one of the best non- IV league schools in the country.

How about this, if you get a 4.2 high school GPA average I'll give YOU my rx-8..Do you think getting grades like that is easy? I got a 1200 on my SATs, I'm taking this as a personal attack, you have know idea what shit I've gone through in just 17 years of my life. Without going into detail I'll just say I lived in Saudi Arabia and I was beaten in Arabic schools for being half-white from first to sixth grade, and I'm not talking about beating from students either , I'm talking about teachers who are full grown men and I weighed maybe 105 in 6th grade. So don't talk to me about spoiled, and don't judge my driving abilities because of stereotypes of people my age, I got %100 on my normal driving test and I got a %94 in a special driving school that teaches performance driving which cost ME, NOT MY PARENTS, $300, because I did not want to ruin the Rx-8 they got me.

DaveW 01-26-05 11:45 AM

VelociRedBeast:

Well spoken.

I'm 62 and in some ways you sound more thoughtful and mature than I am. You certainly have had more life-forming experiences than me.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck with it.

I'm glad to hear that you took a performance driving school. I've raced cars for 37 years, and it's just amazing how poorly most people drive. Knowing what to do when (when, not if) you get into a difficult driving situation is really important when you drive a small (not very visible to other drivers), high-performance car.

Some of these are just from rx7club.com itself. You will learn a lot from the owners on this site.
1. The Vacuum lines have gotten brittle over time and will break
2. The gas guage doesn't always read true
3. 5th Gear syncro was faulty on a series of VIN #'s
4. Stock coolant problems
5. Overheating problems sometimes due to the pre-cat

Obviously, these are just a FEW of the things that this car possess'. This list could go on forever...

It's ultimately your decision on what you are gonna do. Just be prepaired when your engine blows, because it will.

FD3SJesse 01-26-05 12:34 PM

pgtze 01-26-05 12:40 PM

if i were you, id just wait untill your out of college with a steady job, then think about the trade, or just outright buy your own fd... the worst thing in the world is having your car break down on you while your in college(and i almost gurantee you the rx7 will break down more then once)... youll have no money to fix it, no time, no place... its just a pain in the ass. id say ride out the rx8 deal untill you graduate then buy yourself a nice lil graduation present(rx7) and have fun with it then. but thats just what i think... good luck with whatever you decide man, both cars are sweet.... if i was you id just trade the auto for the 6 speed rx8

where to start, where to start. you came onto a web-forum and expected people not to be dicks. 1200 on your SAT! oh my God you must be some kinda of freakin super genius... oh, oh wait... no, no... i did better than that. a 4.2 GPA oh wow that's just oh, wait, no, thats really not proving anything either beause i know plenty of people that did that and by the way, its high school, not real life... there is a difference. 100% on your driving test! um... no that's really common and considdering all the a-holes that pass its not all that impressive either.

so you've had a rough life, whoopedy doo, you're not the first. get over it. you don't deserve compensation. if you want the car, get it. if you do, don't bitch about it breaking down. :D have a nice day you freakin run of the mill super genius... and always remember, you're unique and special, just like everyone else.
