Looking for an R1 lip? Some info....
Hey guys,
was ordering some parts from "Sprayin' Ray" Crowe at Malloy Mazda, and he told me that, get this........he is blowing out R1 front lips for $105 per pair, shipped! Insane. I may get one for the inevitable day when my 99 spec is too trashed to keep on the car :D. Anyway, just thought I would pass along a great deal--I think he has a bunch available. |
Good info. Does Ray have any idea why the price has dropped so much lately?
|
$105 per pair-so does this mean 2 r1 lips for $105 or the 2 pieces that make up the r1 lip for $105? and this is the 93-95 r1 lip, not the 99 spec right? will the 93-95 r1 lip fit on the 99 spec front bumper?

fwiw: the R-1 was 93 only model, 94-95s are R-2 spec with a smaller rear roll bar and slightly softer than R-1 shocks |

is the R1 front lip different than the R2 front lip? i have a 94 base and want to make sure the R1 lip will fit.
btw, anyone have any info re: the R1 front lip from a performance standpoint? |

That site called mazdapartscheap.com, had them listed for $110. A guy on here back in late Nov posted, asking if it was legit. Everyone was understandably interested. It arrived, and it was legit, and a whole bunch of orders piled in to that site - I ordered 2. My order was cancelled (one of many) because the guy said he only had a few in stock and even pulling from all the ones warehoused in the US, was still very sold out. He said several weeks minimum for backorder from Japan. So I immediately called Ray - he was able to reserve the last two in the country at his rate - just over $100. Up to this point, Ray said the part number for the lip assembly (both halves) was never available, and when I had him look it up, he's like "well hell I want a couple too!! That cool!". Up to that point, the only way he could get them was by each half separately for $170 total. So now it appears Mazda is stocking the lip assembly, and the price is much cheaper than buying the halves separately. I suspect Mazda noticed the stock of lip pieces getting thin, and had a whole bunch made, and for a lower price than before. Just check availability - I don't know if Mazda Japan has replenished US stock. BTW, what exactly is Ray Sprayin? Dave |
Ray is an awesome guy, just ordered mine. He said something about using the hardware that is already there for the lip. What hardware? I have nothing.

The hardware is like 8 10mm bolts that hold the bottom molding to the front bottom part of the bumper. You will simply remove the 10mm bolts slide out what you have exisiting and slide the new R1 lip in place of it. Its real simple. |
There are also brake ducts that go with the R1/R2 lip that non R1/R2 models do not have. Not sure how much they cost. You could probably make your own out of sheet metal if you are resourceful...

What I am saying is that I have nothing existing under my bumper, which means I have no hardware I guess. Guess I will have to rig something. |

Seriously, it's the same screws that hold on the other lip types, and like the other said, brake ducts. They're about $40/ea IIRC. Dave |

R1/R2, R2D2 it's all the same lip just a different name.

dude, the 93 94 and 95 lips are round. the splitter you refer to is the 99spec. and im 100% positive.
|
Gotta get me a R1 lip!
|
R1 and R2 cars have the same lip. Same part number, same thing.
It's the 99 specs that are a little different. |

The lip. The R1 lip is more flat, much more like a splitter. The R2 lip is much more rounded I guess you can say? And the material it's made of looks a lot more like rubber than the plasticy look off the R1 lip. Def. apparently different if you know what you're looking for (I have a 94 R2, so I noticed the diff off the bat).

So,is there any fellow member, kind enough to by one for me,and ship it to Greece?
I can pay with paypal.. |
General question about Ray @ Malloy... what other parts does he sell besides R1 lips? I am guessing ALL OEM parts for our FD's? If so, that is great... if parts go out on me, I will know where to get them.
thanks. |

Just ordered mine. Ray says he is out of stock at the moment, but says he has more coming in next week and will ship it then. $106 plus change shipped. Thanks for letting us all know.

I had to drop my belly pan to get enough leverage to get the new lip to snap into place. I was not able to get the little hooks to eaisily push thru the plastic. The hooks act to hold the lip in place if you remove the belly pan to work on something underneath. |

The bolts that hold it on are the same 10mm thread pattern as the rest of the car. You can get them at any hardware store. The clips that the bolts go into can be purchased from any Mazda dealer for about $1.50 each.

The OEM screws are just washer-head screws (10mm drive, M4(?) thread) and any fitting screw and fender washer work fine. In fact, get stainless since the stock ones rust. Ramy, the parts list from '95 shows there was only one part number for all R models. If they had two different varieties available, there would be two numbers and info on which build dates get which. Dave, ok I guess I stand corrected... :) (I'm STILL gonna keep an eye out for 'em tho LOL... <----stubborn :p: )
