Knock sensor
Knock sensor
I hear that the J&S knock sensor is highly reccommended on these cars, but if you have a Apex PFC, does it control knocking? If you had a PFC, do you still need a J&S knock sensor?
I have both the PowerFC and the J&S installed on my car. You can use both without any problems.
The PowerFC does not do any knock control. It does read the signal from the stock knock sensor and display it on the screen, but it doesn't do anything with the signal, as far as I know.
To me, the main value of the J&S is that it tells you when something is wrong. It does do ignition retard, which can save your engine from minor tuning errors, or a bad tank of gas, or a heat-soaked IC, etc. But it won't save you from major problems like a fuel pump or regulator failing, etc. Well, not on its own anyway -- you might be able to save your engine in such instances by letting off the gas when the J&S display lights up.
The PowerFC displays the signal from the stock sensor, but I don't know if it is as accurate as the J&S display, and I do find that the J&S display is easier to mount in the driver's view and is more dramatic, and thus more likely to be noticed when you need to see it. So you might still want a J&S for the display, even though the PowerFC has its own knock sensor display.
