Just replaced my door lock light again

Not bad, the first one held for nearly 8 years! :)

I put a green bulb in instead of an amber this time....looks cool.

The door lock light is only on the driver's side. It comes on for about 3 minutes when you lift the handle. It is easy to fix, you simply remove the plastic cover at the rear of the inside door directly opposite the handle, take off the 10mm nuts and lift the handle assembly off from the outside, you will only be able to get it a short distance from the door as all the cables/rods will be attached. But...you will see two white wires going into a rubber cavity. If you look hard this rubber cavity is actually a rubber plug that goes into a rubber cavity. Get some small needle nose pliers or a small pick and gently pry the rubber 'tube' carrying the small bulb out. Then you can pull the bulb out of the rubber tube thingy. Over here I go to Radio Shack and get a 12 volt 'grain of wheat' bulb. They have various colours. One that I got was cool as hell, it had two small pieces of heat-shrink tubing included. Anyway, just cut the leads as close to the bulb, slide some appropriate sized heat shrink tubing over the leads a ways back to give you some room, solder in the new leads, slide the heat shrink tubing up and apply some heat and, voila! Now just put the bulb in the rubber tube thingy, and...this is the fun part....slide the tube back into the cavity. It helps to apply some sort of lube, I went with a silicone based stuff I use on 'O' rings and it slid right in.

Enjoy this semi-cool little feature of the FD.

Hey thanks for the post, ever since I bought my FD it never worked so I was never aware that I had it... and I was getting upset that my buddy's supra lit up. I'll be going to radioshack today!

Oh awesome. I'll have to put this on my "to-do" list. Do you know if the ignition light is the same kind of bulb?

c00lduke 08-19-07 09:59 PM

I never knew our cars had this feature. Any pictures?

grimple1 08-20-07 12:10 AM

ditto.. there's no light near my key hole. I do it all in the dark b/c I'm a smooth pimp.

turboIIrotary 08-20-07 12:17 AM

mine still works after 14 years

Prometheus 08-20-07 12:22 AM

Was this available on Base models? 95'?

Could you please post a picture of what you are talking about?

turboIIrotary 08-20-07 12:26 AM

nope i got a 93 and i have it

Prometheus 08-20-07 12:28 AM

are you saying this is a touring package accessory?

turboIIrotary 08-20-07 12:33 AM

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...m/DSCF0036.jpg

its the little orange light that lights up your key hole

Prometheus 08-20-07 12:40 AM

Oh, I thought you guys were referring to a light on the outside of the vehicle. (on the door latch)

I was imagining an illuminated "halo" around the door lock.

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

I do have that (its probably a standard option) because my car is a Base

Thanks again.

P.S. The Halo would have been a cool little doodad though.

RX7 RAGE 08-20-07 12:40 AM

All FD's had the illuminated door lock light on the driver side. Mine went out 3 years ago so this may prove useful. :)

What do you mean "driver side" are you talking about the light that shines on the ignition key hole?

Jesus, I'm confused...:Wconfused

so you are saying that my door lock is illuminated?

Prometheus 08-20-07 01:10 AM

Damn it!

Now I wont be able to sleep.

I hope you feel guilty RX7 RAGE...

turboIIrotary 08-20-07 01:15 AM

i think i searched for 10 min. around my door lock to see if there was a light.

sevensix 08-20-07 01:25 AM

the light is in the handle assembly, above the door lock. u can't see if from the outside.

some info from when i fixed my light with a LED bulb. https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/door-lock-delima-496572/

SLOASFK 08-20-07 01:47 AM

I was always confused why the Probes and MX-6s had lit keyholes, but the FD didn't...now I know they're just broken  It's funny, because that was one feature I really liked on my Probe. You're in a pitch black area and all you have to do is tug on the door handle and poof, there's the keyhole. :icon_tup: thanks Baja.

RLaoFD 08-20-07 02:25 AM

hey just so you guys know i did mine today like i said after a quick run to radioshack. instead of using needle noses to pull the rubber tube out you can just wiggle the wire that holds the assembly in place and the whole key lock assembly will move. Afterwards you can just pull out the rubber tube.

baja- i also used green, it matches the car a lot better. thanks for the write up seems like im not the only one that didnt know!
