JDM vs. US carpet

Anyone know if there are any differences in these two cause i was going to order from RHDJapan but just wanted to check here first. Also, did the carpet material change throughout the years of the RX7? My FD is the oldest FD cause the manufacturer date is August of 92 or close to it. I've seen pictures of newer 95+ FD's and the carpet looks different. My carpet looks uncut, loops vs. i guess cutpile or whatever

Any feedback would be appreciated, :)

JDM car's have different ECU, trunk/gas lever, driver's rest foot and A/C locations. Those elements do change shape of the carpet.

It's not straight swap as you have for example to cut drivers side carpet to utilise trunk/gas lever and somehow to fix left opening in the passenger side. Same goes for ECU, as JDM/USDM kickpanels are different and you are left with exposed opening on the drivers side floor.

I think I'll have to make a writeup on this when it's done, I have no other option as to use original JDM carpet.

Going through years Rx-7 carpets were downgraded, mine for example which is 97 is cut pile and is not as dense as you would expect from high grade carpet. After all weight saving was pririority for Mazda

So when you order a new one, there is only one that can be bought not several. My carpet is in really good shape but I guess comparing it to modern carpet it looks less dense.

I plan on trimming the excess where it is not needed and joining carpet patches with additional support material on the backside. From what I see I should be able to do it with only one carpet.

Carpet which came from 94 touring looked more thick than one from 97 Type-RS.
If I had a chance I think I would go with non OEM LHD carpet and call it a day, but if you're hunting for OEM, it can be done. In fact I'll upload some photo's later this day showing RHD carpet in LHD interior.

Well, I know everyone's opinions differ but some ppl said that the non OEM carpets looked bad and the fit isn't great... But for the price it would be almost worth checking out.

Anyone ever order from rx7carpets.com?

Here are visible differences between RHD and LHD carpets

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/s...s/DSC04989.jpg

The gap near drivers foot rest, it's been made so to fit RHD ECU.

USDM/EUDM ECU is on the right side of the car, carpet has to be cut for ECU to be fitted

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/s...s/DSC04990.jpg

Trunk/gas lid lever in LHD RHD models are on a different sides.

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/s...s/DSC04992.jpg

This opening on a passenger side would have to be closed, it looks complicated but I think it can be made properly.

Basically these are the main concerns while using RHD carpet in LHD model.

As for non OEM carpet I would recommend checking this post:

Hope that helps,

So that carpet you have there is the carpet I would get if I ordered it through rhdjapan. And also that is cut pile right? I like that look.. Definitely more dense then mine loop type

Narukas 12-10-12 06:33 PM

Yes it would be the same, same look and form carpet. It's a cut pile, but I can't tell if it's textured or frieze type. IDK personally I would like more thick, premium carpet, but it's just my taste :)

Yeah, new vehicle carpets today looks awesome..

That's my thread and car.

The carpet I ordered comes in a "cut pile". It is not the "closed loop" OEM style used in the FD. It is a thicker carpet style and to me, looks better than the OEM stuff. More rich and plush to the touch. On the downside, it will attract and hold more lint for sure. Looks very similar to the rhdjapan, com carpet but thicker and more plush. The rdh carpet is $1,000 plus shipping and what I got from auto-interiors.com was $211 total, including shipping. I'd say that is the better way to go considering what you get from rhdjapan is for RHD not LHD and you need to cut anyway.

For the OEM style loop product (at least what was in my 94), you can order this:

http://www.auto-interior.com/1loopcarpet.htm

They state it comes on older cars and that may be, but it is also what is on our FDs. So, if you want the OEM style or loop product, you can order that instead of what I did. It is a $30 up charge.

So the carpet you get with auto interior can be used for both RHD and LHD cause the reason why i checked out RHDjapan is because i own a RHD but if the auto interior carpet doesnt have the holes, then i guess it can be used for both, correct? is there more padding under the drivers feet (LHD) or are they the same on both, minus the rubber wear pad that i noticed on some aftermarket carpets.

^ Yes, I don't see any reason why it won't work as you have to cut the holes. The floor pan and tranny tunnel are the same on JDM and US based cars I believe.

They do fuse on a rubber footpad on the left side so you may not want this and could probably request it be left off or swapped to the right side. Get's covered up anyway by floor mats.

The only downside is they don't ship put of the country. If you are stateside or have a friend that can receive the carpet then send it on to you, you are good to go.

collectiv 12-21-12 09:22 PM

Well, you think they are acc carpets, I was told the carpets on a few websites all sourced there's from acc which I'm assuming is a maker.

I have heard this too on this forum but have no way of knowing if it is true. My carpet fit well and others have had issues. I do I know that I ordered from Indiana and the carpet shipped from Atlanta if that helps.

Bump. Does anyone have the pictures re-uploaded from Naruka?
