j spec motor reliability

hi everyone i did do a little searching but j was too common to search anyway i was thinking about buying jspec i just wanted to see what you guys have to say about them thanks fo reading

What does "J-spec" have to do with anything? The short blocks are the same, it would be just like buying a used motor from here.

In my opinion you are going to want to get that motor opened up, inspected and 'refreshed.'

Installing a motor where you really don't know (a) the mileage, (b) the history of oil changes and peak temps reached and (c) the actual compression results is (again in my opinion) asking for trouble.

this thread suggests theres something to be worried about..

goodfella whatyou ean refresh? rebuild?

GoodfellaFD3S 04-27-06 10:55 PM

inspect and replace whatever is out of spec (side/corner/apex seals and springs, oil control orings) and replace coolant orings, dowel pin orings.....basically a rebuild :)

might as well rebuild the engine i have already instead

weetbix13 04-27-06 11:23 PM

yep! unless it is completely munted, your current short block is a great place to start.

There are threads out there if you search. You have lots of options in Cali, but they pricey. You'd be better off shipping your car to another state to have the work done.
