ignition amp
ignition amp
ive been reading through old threads trying to get an idea of when an amp is necessary. the results i got were inconclusive. i will be eventually running all the boltons, with a uprgraded ecu. my question is should i get an amp? or is the stock mechanism sufficient for 330-350rwhp?
Yeah...YMMV when you need one. If it runs fine when winding it up, you probably don't need one. Some may have similar setups and one may need one and one may not. When you start bringing on the boost, then that's when you may start to run into issues that would warrant one.
Is there any ignition amp out there that is less than 400? Anyone have one, I imagine they are all about the same things, doesnt seem like anything too complicated to me.
What would you all recommend?

We have had good luck with the XS Power Pack.

Tested up to 18lbs of boost and no break up.

Most racers use a redundant MSD configuration just because it's a known fact that one can quit during a race... so you need a backup...
they should buid 'em better and maybe charge $50 more...

Im running this with stock coils for about a year now. i like it very much. i run sometimes 15lbs boost with my single. on the stock ports. never had any ign. breakup. if this guy is selling you one ....... grab it....
I'm using the HKS, running all bolt ons with a stock cat at 13.5 psi my car dynoed 315 rwhp smoothly with no breakup
Did the HKS do anything? I don't know because I didn't dyno without it. Do I feel a difference? Yes, it idles better and backfires/pops less

I've got the HKS too. I figure better be safe than sorry. I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives out there but who needs to count pennies when your talking about an rx-7??? If I did, I'd have gone mad a long time ago...

They provide enough wire that you can mount it anywhere you want. We usually put it by the ignitor.

I have the CRANE Fireball Amp. It was one of the first ones you could use on a rotary. I picked it up from another forum member used for $100. It goes on the leading plugs only but I noticed improved mileage and no ignition break up at higher rpms.
I think an ignition amp is an upgrade in itself, even if you don't have any break-up it will improve idle stability and throttle response. I had break-up pretty bad before I installed my AEM and it not only cleared that up but made many other things better. I would consider it a basic "bolt-on" performance upgrade just as I would an intercooler.

ive read threads with differing results. some say one box is enough others say you need 3. would one msd 6200 and a turbo II coil do the job?

I have the HKS Twin Power. Brand new off Ebay was around $390 or so with the wiring harness. I no longer have the high RPM break-up like I used to and am getting better gas mileage. I'd recommend it after you have most of the basic bolt-ons.
yes, comes with plenty of wires
I wish I took pictures of my install...it was slick.
12V and GND right where the stock battery gets it, and output straight to the leading coil. I picked up the input from the coil harness that plugs into the chassis harness along with the switched 12V.
basically, I had the amp spliced directly into the short coil harness...four plugs to install, each coil and the chassis harness, then the two terminal lugs for main, PWR and GND...almost looks ALL STOCK
