idle problem

When I start the engine for the first time in the day, the idle will hit about 3k rpm then after like a second, i'll hear a click and it will jump down to 1k rpm. Anyone know what kind of problem this is?

The high RPM is normal for rotory engine, but I am not sure about the click sound

If you start the car in first gear it will bypass the 3000 rpm start up.

Oh sorry, let me make that clearer. The problem is that it goes from 3k to 1k in an instant.

Yah, it's called the Accelerated Warmup system, commonely abbreviated AWS on the forum. Basically it's the stock ECU trying to warm the engine quickly, but it does more harm than good. As afterburn suggested, if you have a 5-spd, starting it in gear will make it not do that.

It's not so much a problem as it is a built in over-sight by the mazda engineers. If you want it fixed for good, buy a Power FC, it doesn't do the AWS thing.
