how does an eltronic boost controller work

How exactly does it work, any idea what kind fo parts go inside? A guy I know made his EBC, so afreind of mine that is really good with elctronics and fabbricating gadgets wants to see if he can make one too.

a boost controller is something that allows pressure to get/not get to the wastegate to open it. An electronic boost controller just controls a solenoid(s) or stepper motor to keep pressure away from the wastegate until the desired boost is reached. Then in opens/shuts to maintain that boost level.

Or in the case of a modded FD, it limits it to a safe setting.

The EBC has to read boost from somwhere to know when to opne the selnoid right? Where does it read that boost from?

Whats the difference between a stepper motor and a solinoid?

The boost pressure feedback is just a simple vacuum hose, typically T off the boost gauge hose or other plenum vac hoses.
There are two schools of thoughts on actuator design. The advantage of the stepper is the precision, the drawback is the response speed. The solenoid system is just the revers, very quick but lacks a little in precision. Some companies have developed duel solenoid designs and claims to be just as precise as the steppers, so it has the best of both worlds. Hope this helps.

Thanks that helps.

I spoke with him and he needs to know more specifics about the internals. Like how is the boost reading converted to an elctronic signal to open/ close the selinoid?

Pressure sensors calibrated for the specific application is what converts the boost pressure into electronic signal. The output is also sensor specific. If this type of question needs to be asked I would seriously advice against such endeavor.

I appreciate the warning, but I have faith in my frind, very smart guy. he's an engineering major too. It still just an idea we're tossing around though.
