How do I retard timing

I want to retard the timing for a notrous shot. Whats is the best way to do this? Will an MSD ignition work? I ahve my concerns since it only works ont he leading plugs.

Here is a link to the install.

Any thoughts on how to retard the timing w/o using a stand alone ecu?

Nope.

most would not put nitrous on an FD, you should read up on that first, IMO

I have read up on it, I've been around the forum for awhile now and I know how poeple feel about it.

Its the most cost effective upgrade for me now since I can get a nitrous kit, and anMSD ignition pretty damn cheap, but thats besides the point.

Any input on the timing retard issue?

really? so an MSD system wont work? Why is that?

nicely put? the stock ecu SUCKS, you shouldn't be running high HP w/ the stock ecu, it's just not safe practice

by stock do you mean stock or reprogrammed stock.

you can get the digital 6 plus ignition box and use its boost/nitrous retard setting. . . but im with the others. . . not a good idea without a standalone EMS.

not even with a small shot? I only intend to run a 75 shot or so.

Well will this work even though the digital 6 will only work with the leading plugs?

Zoomspeed 11-03-03 08:49 PM

oh and Iw as wondering, why is it such a bad idea without a standalone?

93BlackFD 11-03-03 08:55 PM

get a standalone, and then you'll realize it's a whole diff world, and that you don't know how you lived w/ stock ECU and piggy backs

or at least that was the case with me and from what i can see, many others

let em do what he wants.
we all know its not a good idea....

All I asked is why it wouldn't work and you make it sound like I'm just waiting for a differnent answer. If you want to be a snobb at least explain why its a bad idea.

rxrotary2_7 11-03-03 10:12 PM

how bout NO... scott... LOL. :D

how about you explain why you *seem* to be waiting for a different answer? what make you feel that the stock ecu CAN handle it? is it because you can get it *cheap* at the moment? is that what you want to hear... that it WILL work and that its the perfect way to do it? how much can you get a reman motor for? or can you rebuild it yourself? just curious....

rotorbrain 11-03-03 10:13 PM

when retarding rotary ignition for boost or nitrous. . . you are gonna retard leading ignition only if you dont know what youre doing. . . meaning youll run into negative split. . . then on top of that youll be using a "stupid" device to retard your ignition. it doesnt know what the engine really needs so it could be incorrect. . . i dont trust something that stupid to control my car. . . that i spent 20k+ on. . . make sense?

there is A good reason Paul... ;) :)

And that is exactly the kind of answer I'm looking for.

I wasn't waiting for a differnt answer, I was waiting for an explination as to why I got the answer I did. Big differnce there, and no one really answered the why question (including you) until rotorbrain (thanks by the way :)).

If I was sure that it would work; why would I ask? If we can all figure out everything by ourselves w/o making mistakes then whats the point of the forum?

FormerPorscheGuy 11-03-03 11:15 PM

Its your engine and its your car, do what you want to it. Just don't blame us when the big bang happens.

all of this just because I watned an explination to an answer, becasue I didn't want to accept a simple no answer as truth without a reason....
