hot tranny
guys....
i've never seen anyone saying about tranny got hot... yes mine did... i was attending some track event... drove for 4 to 5 laps... and my gear box became so hot.... my leg felt soooo hot... and my gear knob is kinda hot as well.... normal days even i drove hard.. it doesn't get hot at all... 4 to 5 laps... very significant.. i can't hold the gear knob for long hours.... what's going on ? my exhaust is stainless steel midpipe.. straight through.... and it's wrapped with heat resistance poisonous abestos wrap....possible the heat from exhaust ? |
You could be missing heat shielding, you could need to change your transmission oil or it has low oil, if you have a single turbo set up your wastegate dump pipe may not be in a good position. It seems to be only when you drive hard correct? Driving hard raises all temps, if your leg is hot then you are definately missing some heat shielding imo. If you have a chance snap a pick of the underside of your car on the drivers side of the mission. If you have a Right hand drive car it will almost definately be a result of the exhst however the shift knob getting hot could be another issue.

i'm having a right hand driven car...
actually i changed my gear box around 3 months back.. into a 99 spec gear box, basically doesn't make any difference other than the age is not so old. i run in with normal tranny fluid... then i changed to redline MT90... it has been really nice to shift with from there onwards... but never brought to track.. on the track.. yes... my left leg (tigh) is feels hot... i still have my original heat shield there... and yes... the shift knob feels hot as well... that's when i'm trashing it hard on the track.... might take it to the mechanic to check if it's running low on tranny fluid... else i really have no idea what can cause the heat in the tranny. anyone got experience ? |
btw, still stock twins i have there.

It's probably exhaust heat coming up through the tranny tunnel.
The tranny itself definitely gets hot, but not nearly as hot as the exhaust components. Dave |

the thing is that even my gear knob became hot... if it's the tunnel.. the knob won't be that hot...
i called dev (fd3s7007) he also realised the same when he switched to MT90... but he suggested to add friction modifier... and he told me that it reduces the temperature.. not as bad.... |
the thing is that.. it never get hot at all on daily drive.. on highway cruise... on some spirited driving winding roads.... but just on track.... hot day on track.... 4 to 5 laps.... the knob almost untouchable....

Definitely check the oil level then. Too high or too low will cause excessive heating.

Couple things.
I'm not a fan of Redline oils. The test that I've seen usually show them to be fairly thin (i.e. fairly low viscosity all the time). I would recommend something like Neo, Royal Purple or Amsoil. The transmission will still get hot on the road course, no doubt. There is no transmission cooler for the manual transmission. It is possible to add one but it would be quite a bit of work. Next, there should be some insulation on the shifter. Have you pulled the rubber cover off the shifter make sure you still have the insulation? |
Is it an aluminum or metal shift knob? Those always get really hot regardless of oil used. Switch to a non-metal knob.
Verify that you have the rubber "boot" covering the gap around the shifter. If missing buy one and install. Verify that you have the funny looking insulation pad over the rubber cover. If missing buy one and install. Check your oil level. If low it may be getting too hot. I noticed a difference replacing the oil in my tranny as in the link I posted using Redline MTL. |

ive always heard that was a problem with the JDM FD's the exhaust creates alot of heat into the tranny tunnel, and a lot of Japanese guys convert their FD's to LHD to avoid this. I personally havent had a problem but thats just me.

The heat problem is most likely due to a ripped or mission boot. The rubber boots typically get ripped when people do tranny R & R's. When it's ripped it will definitely add some extra heat to the shifter panel. The problem could also be related to the gear oil. I would definitely change it over to NEO synthetic. Here's a linky...

i've just checked, the rubber insulation is still there. i have double protection... two rubber boot. mid pipe wrapped with heat insulation.
yes i'm still using my stock shifter.. but replaced the knob with an aluminum wrapped with carbon fibre.. could it be the shifter's bush ? mine replaced with a copper bush instead of original plasticky ones. |
No The shifter bushing has no effect on heat.
Is the tranny noisy at all. As everyone else knowledgeable in this thread has said. get rid of the Redline and put some good oil in it. If your bearings are worn it will cause excessive heat as well. You will most likely hear the bearings before you feel the heat. Mine is a good example of this;) Also you can NOT compare street driving,even "spirited" driving to laps on a road course. They are two completely different animals. Everything is increased exponentially on a road course. So it is not a good comparison. Did you ever do road course events with the old trannny in? Did it get hot as well? |
