Homebrew Theft deterrent LED wiring
Hi guys,
I have done this before on another car (not Mazda) and wanted to confirm that the RX7 will be the same to wire:
On previous car-
1. Bought flashing red anti theft (dummy) LED and installed it in conspicous place on instrument cluster. LED has 2 wires: Pos +12V and -Neg earth.
2. I connected the positve wire to constant 12V positive source.
3. I then connected the Negative (earth) wire to the oil pressure sensor wire on the block.
Stay with me, I can explain why I wired it like this:
I chose oil pressure sensor, because with engine off (no oil pressure), the sensor grounds, completing the circuit, and the LED will blink on the dashboard.
When I crank and start the engine, the oil pressure rises in the oil galleries, the oil pressure sensor is pushed open by the oil pressure, and the LED light circuit is interrupted (no more ground at oil pressure sensor) so the LED does not blink whilst engine is running/I am driving.
I had wired the LED this way on the other car because I dont want a blinking LED staring at me while I'm driving. I want it activated with engine off, and inactive when driving.
So... Can someone confirm that the oil pressure sensor in the FD operates the same- grounds out when zero oil pressure.
Simple mod, fools would-be thieves who look in the window and see an alarm light flashing, takes half an hour to install. Worked great on previous car.
I dont need any "Why would you want to do this? Just blah blah.. I dont understand what you're asking" replies. if you dont know how the oil pressure sensor operates, dont reply

Can you not use another circuit that has no power with the key off? Using something like the oil pressure sensor honestly seems more difficult. Try the windshield wiper circuit. The wipers don't work with the key off and the wires are closer.
Stock oil pressure sender is not an on-off switch like most modern oil pressure switches. I believe it has a resistance throughout the whole range of 0 psi to whatever it maxes out at. I don't think it ever has full continuity or open circuit.
In that case I went to plan B:
On the LED-
Black Neg - wire goes to Ignition switched +12V
Red Pos + wire goes to Battery constant +12V
Verified that this combination gives me flashing light when engine off, and no flash when engine started.
Because with IGN off, IGN switched source earths through the loom (there must be a sensor that grounds out somewhere in the loom) and constant 12V+ provides power, so LED blinks.
Ignition on, and the earth supply goes away, so blinking ceases.
For people that asked, this is in addition to an alarm, or could be used on its own. Blinking red theft lights on dashboard will deter thieves from breaking and entering. It is not part of an alarm system, but can complement one.
Certainly along with alarm decals on the windows, this provides a very good deterrent to would-be-thieves (That, and my steering wheel has a quick-release hub, which is another deterrent in itself)

For those who say "just pull the EGI fuse out" this is not 100% effective. The fuses that live in the slots either side of the EGI can be plugged into the EGI slot, and voila, car will run...
I prefer to custom make my own theft deterrents into the car, along with an alarm system in future. Alarms are commonplace, but nobody takes notice of them much anymore when they go off (not in my city it seems) and besides, nobody knows the ins & outs of my car like I do. We cant stop them entirely, but we can make it harder for them, or at least introduce an element of doubt into a car thief's mind

Alarms are only non deterrent if they're installed by crappy stereo shops. The best way to install one is by yourself and hidden. Stereo shops just ziptie it to the steering column. All you have to do is look under the column and unplug it...Totally useless. What you need is a good alarm installed behind the cluster with a battery back up. Also have the alarm kill things such as the fuel pump or ECU power. Its very easy to set up if you do a little research.

It's a bit time consuming, but if you have a PFC and commander you can bring your rev limiter down to 500 rpm. I've done this very rarely over the years, but it's effective. Your FD won't be going anywhere, not under it's own power anyway

I would also utilize both vibration and proximity sensors in the system. I had mine tweaked perfectly. If you got within a foot of my car, it would warn. Keep coming closer and it would sound.
