Help! Odometer rollback?

I've been talking to a seller of an Rx-7 and he says the car has just over 100k miles on it. The odometer says pretty close to what he said in the add. Only thing is that when I checked carfax, it had a 1998 odometer logging was beyond what is currently on the car. I'm new to buying used cars in general, can someone tell fill me in on what's going on?

What are the legal aspects of this? If I was going to replace the engine anyway, should it matter, even if just out of principle, or would I get stung in the end, if I let the car go and the odometer WAS rolled back? What else can I ask to snoop more info?

Thanks for your help,

Jon

Best bet is to TELL the SELLER, of this INFO you have
and Negotiate a lower price..

WHILE YOu are at it..

ASK HOW HE ROLLED the ODOMETER Back..

I think that the odemeter is saved in the gauge assembly, and if replaced, would relfect that of the donor car. This may have been a honnest mistake since someone may have tried to "fix" a broken gauge assembly by replacing it. Then again, the car could have stripped vin numbers. Better check the fire wall with the window vin just to be safe.

I think if your car has 100K on it, and you find a gauge cluster with say 50K on it...then your car will have 50K for that time.

If the car really has been rolled back and can be proven, it wont' have a clear title any longer but an "other title". You can for sure negotiate this. Also, you can almost take this up with the DMV and get some real mula back.

Just a side note. FC actually have dual odometers. One you can't see, nor access very easy.

Do you mean FC as in 86-87 RX7 or FC meaning something else?
