help loud bearing noise .. possibly main pulley

started car one day and belt snapped .. car hasn't started since .. today i got the engine to turn on and car is running but there is a lot of bearing noise coming from main pulley .. any idea whats causing it?

Your belt may have snapped due to a sticking accessory (A/C compressor seized, etc). Take the belts off and make sure all pullies spin freely and check the movement of the accessories that have a clutch. The outer pulley may spin, but when the clutch is engaged, the accessory needs to spin freely as well.

Main pulley... as in the one connected to the e-shaft?

Main pulley... as in the one connected to the e-shaft?
yes

I'm just wondering how you know the nosie is coming from that exact pulley. It's the least likely to make any noise since it's bearing is the front main bearing, which is way less prone to failure than the ball bearings in the accesories.

The only thing I can think of making noise at the main pulley would be the oil pump/thrust bearing stack...

im not sure myself .. my friend the mechanic said thats where the noise is emanating from

before all this .. when the car stopped working .. i turned the car on and i heard a loud ping .. like metal hitting metal .. when i looked under the hood the belt had torn

Maybe the pulley is loose or cracked?

Check the 4 bolts on the pulley. One time mine sheered a few off, It was wobbling around and causing a crap load of noise.

thanks for all the help ... did what alexdimen recommended .. took off the belt .. and tested each pulley .. turns out water pump went bad
