Heel and toe

I'm 6" tall and everytime I try to heel and toe the steering wheel gets in the way of my right thigh preventing me to blip the throttle with my heel.

I tried adjusting the seat further backwards but it still doesnt help.

I cannot adjust the steering wheel position right?

How do you guys do it?
Will getting a set of closer, larger pedals help?
Any recommendations?

Right, it's not adjustable.

If the steering wheel is in the way, then larger pedals isn't going to help that much.

You can purchase an aftermarket steering wheel which is either a D-Cut and/or a smaller diameter. Also, getting an aftermarket seat which sits lower to the floor can help but do the steering wheel first as that may be all you need.

I suggest you try doing the "other" version of heel-toeing by blipping the gas with the SIDE of your foot instead of your heel. THAT technique is where a widefoot pedal adapter will help.

I never heel-toe in an rx7. It's more like a bigtoe-little toe. Big toe on the brake, little toe blips the throttle. It seems easier and quicker to me than to try the heel-toe. This may not work for everyone as I'm 6' and have fat ass feet.

NukeGenius 03-30-04 01:02 PM

Well if you are only six inches tall, I would suggest growing a bit so that your feet actually touch the pedals. I'm sure that was just a typo though.

P'cola FD 03-30-04 01:04 PM

What are you talking about? 6" would be six inches. 6' is six feet.

Or is the public school system here in Florida really as bad as they say?

Or the original poster typed 6"

no but your high school called and they want their lame jokes back. hey wait a minute... my joke was lame too.

obviously the guy meant 6'

as far as heel-toe i do like P'cola or i do heel toe in reverse. heel on brake toes on gas.

edit: nevermind...i get it now. but i will leave the thread like this as a tribute to my stupidity.

Ok, nevermind. I missed that. Carry on.

seanfd3s 03-30-04 02:16 PM

dunno man try using the side of your feet. my wheel is fixed to im 6 foot w/ size 13 feet and i can do it fine in any car. find what workes best for you

Fatman0203 03-30-04 02:47 PM

Im also 6 feet and its impossible, the other method works well using the side of your foot. Yet I consider it better to use the other way. No idea. Anyone got a pic of a steering wheel with the D cut?

clayne 03-30-04 02:56 PM

Don't even try to use the traditional method if you're over 5'10.

The "alternate" works just fine, and may even be more appropriate with firewall pivoting pedals (as opposed to floor-mount).

NukeGenius 03-30-04 02:57 PM

The D cut steering wheel looks just like a regular one, only the bottom side is cut straight across so you can move your legs under it easier.

alberto_mg 03-30-04 03:38 PM

I plan on getting the Sparco Mugello wheel to circumvent this issue. I'm 5'10" and have the same problem.

Ok, I KNOW I'm gonna get a whole heap o' crap for this. You people just remember that not everyone else around knows as much as you, and how am I gonna learn if I never ask.... WHY are you doing this "heal-toe" thing? Obviously it serves a purpose, but I haven't the slightest idea what that is. (Unless it's TOO obvious and I still missed it anyway). I know, I know, laugh it up! I'm trying to picture a time when one would want to do this.... can't think of it. But in my defense I'm at work and tired as hell.

cloud9 03-30-04 03:57 PM

you should not need a bigger stearing wheel, you should have the ball of your foot on the brake, and since your tall and have long legs I suggest getting a wider gas pedal that is closer to the brake, then (while keeping the ball of your foot on the brake) roll your foot (ankle) and use the outer sidewall of your foot to blip the throttle

so I say go for the bigger gas pedal

The idea is to match engine speed with wheel speed for certain gears, so there is less stress on the drivetrain/clutch when you downshift (short version)

poolman1126 03-30-04 04:14 PM

Oh. :banghead: Suppose I should consider doing that from now on. As opposed to doing the "brake, downshift, brake, downshift, brake, downshift, stop, hold clutch" thing. I can see how that'd be better for your driveline. Thanks cloud9!

poss 03-30-04 04:21 PM

Downshifting with out rev matching can unsettle the car and spin out. Also, by double clutching, you can get into 1st gear with out being basically stopped.

XSTransAm 03-30-04 04:30 PM

I was trying to heel toe once and got my food caught between the break and gas pedal... scary and embarassing cause people were watching. :(

post 1k :)

dgeesaman 03-30-04 04:45 PM

I didn't have instruction when I learned to heel/toe and so I do it with the instep on the brake and my toe rotated around to blip the gas. It keeps my knee toward the console, and with my instep on the brake I can press pretty hard on the brake and still point my toe to do the blip.

Not sure yet if a racing instructor is going to have to unlearn me of it tho.

if I am understanding you right a racing instructor would tell you to unlearn that, are you saying your using the heel of your foot on the brake? If so the reason you would be told to change that is because with your technique in order to aply certain amounts of brake pressure in different situations you have to modulate your entire leg as opossed to just your foot
