Have a question for you FD boys/girls

Ok, I am in the process of trying to buy a fd.
AND...someone (Mr. Anonymous) has scared me to death. He informed me that there is a chance I'm going to smell like exhaust everytime I get out of the car. WELL, I have to admit, I may be tom-boyish in some categories (taekwondo, cars, etc) but I am still WAY TOO GIRLEY to be smelling like EXHAUST. And, I have noticed that some RX7 people do kinda stink like exhaust...I just never put two and two together.

What's yalls opinions.....? IF this is true...I'm going to have to join the dark side and buy a Supra or something instead. :(

Love,
Diana

Just keep the stock dp and main cat on and you most definitely will not smell like exhaust. Even with a ss dp and high flow cat you should be okay, but may smell a wee bit.

DyanaT 02-10-02 04:34 PM

wee bit = bad enough

daze 02-10-02 04:36 PM

I only smell gas burning when i start the car but my FD is running rich tho.

Brad 02-10-02 04:37 PM

Just keep it stock then. What, a stock rexy isnt good enough for you? pfft :D

Silver7 02-10-02 04:37 PM

Whoever told you this is full of shit. If you take the cats off of any car it will stink like exhaust. As long as you leave the main cat on, it will be no different then any other car.

DyanaT 02-10-02 04:41 PM

GotBoostd7....here's my deal....I dont want like some Single Turbo, modified up the ass 7. All I want is to be able to beat the local riceboys, 'Stangs, etc... but at the same time... being girley and smellin' good takes total priority over having a fast car. =))

But thanks for yall answering back so fast, I feel somewhat better.

You don't need to have a single turbo to kick ass on the streets. You'll be able to man-handle 99.999% of the cars you'll ever encounter with just the stock sequentials and all the bolt-on's.

The gassy smell comes when you throw on the mid-pipe...I used to have a hi-flo cat. and I never smelled like exhaust...but now I have the mid-pipe and I stink...but I don't care...

Stick with a hi-flo and you won't have any worries....and try not to camp around the exhaust while the car is running:D

Btw, I went to your website, and you have very pretty eyes;)

then buy a Supra. even a stock FD or Supra will destroy most cars out there. if its the smell of the exhaust that holding you back, i dont think the FD is the right car for you.

just my .02

Brad 02-10-02 04:49 PM

Well then there's no problem! Keep the stock cat in, get dp, intake, ECU, FMIC, Fuel and you will lay the smack on all the local rice boys

nope...still searchin for one.

Brad 02-10-02 04:53 PM

Seems like its getting harder and harder to find a decent FD lately. Took me 1.5 years to find mine. Good luck

DyanaT 02-10-02 04:57 PM

Yeah Ive been looking since December....I'm really getting impatient. :( I know what I want...black...preferrabley 94....5 speed...but NICE & CLEAN...I don't want my fd to look like a 93 or 94. But its getting so hard to wait...I'm having to convince myself daily to not switch colors to one that's easier to find. =((((((

Brad 02-10-02 05:05 PM

If you're picky about the color your gonna wait a long time.

Specific color, low miles, good condition, 94, 5-speed....

You'll definitely have to search nation wide and be willing to ship and/or pick the car up.

Like I said, I looked for 1.5 years and still had to settle for red.

WHO 02-10-02 05:06 PM

Well, you just need to have it repainted then :D That's what I did :)

And, I never got out of my car smelling exhaust, not even after solo racing... Mr. Anonymous must be out of his mind...

DamonB 02-10-02 06:18 PM

The smell is from running a midpipe: no cat. Makes the car smell like ass not to mention the soot on the bumper.

Tell Mr. Anonymous to put the cat on and shower; the two of you will be just fine :D

lt7 02-10-02 06:25 PM

Dy,
Go for the Supra. It has more cargo space and has a bullet proof engine that will last you for a long time. But if you do get a seven at least Mr Anonymous can fix it for you. Are you keeping the stang as a daily driver?

Johnny 02-10-02 07:42 PM

i have a dp, high flow cat, and cat back, and ecu and i dont smell, but midpipes really do give out some nice smells, so jsut stick with a high flo cat and you will be happy, my girlfriend has yet to complain. well until last week when my motor died and she misses riding in the 7.

Goober 02-10-02 09:46 PM

Well if I see any black ones I'll let you know.

DyanaT 02-10-02 11:02 PM

Stickgoat...
I'm a dental hygiene major. Can you imagine walking into a dental clinic and having the chick come over and stink like exhaust??? I mean, I'm going to be sitting practically on top of these people cleaning their teeth so that they can pay for all my mods. I dont exactly think that its professional for me to be less than a foot away and smelling like ASS. I mean shit, if I'm out with the car guys and I stink like exhaust, I dont give a rat's ass. =)
Anyways, just depends on where your life is "OUTSIDE OF YOUR CAR."

Schumi 02-10-02 11:30 PM

i wouldn't worry about the smell of exhaust... i've got a DP and an Apexi GT (main cat still installed).... and the car smells fine, more like leather than exhaust.... it would never stink up your clothes like cigarettes from at a bar....

just keep a little lauder in the hygenist kit... in case there is an exhaust odor emergency...

Greys 10th 02-10-02 11:35 PM

DyanaT

There is a Black 93 Rx7 in Mobile Al. It has 30 something thousand miles on it. The ad says it is mint. They want 16K for it. By the way i dont know them or anything, I was there visiting my parents and looking throuh the paper i found two of them; the other was Montago Blue with 50 something thousandmiles on it...tan leather..5spd. they wanted 14 thousand for it. Dont know if that is too far for you or not...and I believe you said you wanted a 94..but the 30 something thousand miles is almost worth taking a 93..I dont think the price is bad at all on either one of them.
well good luck hunting one down
later
I can get the numbers if you are interested..well I hope i could, i would have to call my parents and get them to look.

Find her at the price you can affort....took her home ..strip her...give her new clothes...make her sexy and decent. :=)

maxpesce 02-11-02 01:11 AM

I run a street port, DP and stock cat, and even with my turbos leaking a qt of oil/400mi into the intake I have no Problem w/ exhaust smells - The only odor problem I ever had with my fd was that the previous owner was a SMOKER and I had to scrub the leather about 10 times to get the smoke smell out. Now the interior justs smells like clean leather.

:bash:

oh... I never notice the exhaust smell anymore either, I alway thought it was sexy anyways.... :D

AreExSeven 02-11-02 02:09 AM

Quick Question:

Is this smell thing a problem with FC's too, or just with FD's?

Pouya 02-11-02 02:26 AM

moving to 3rd generation specific forum.

Boost 02-11-02 03:14 AM

after driving my supra with dp (on supras this = dp+mp) i'd always smell like gas. in my fd with dp, i don't notice it at all. i'd guess that with any car as long as you have a cat on there, you'd be ok.

DyanaT 02-11-02 08:54 AM

You moderators are strange...I posted in 3rd gen specific...you move me to lounge....now I'm moved back!?!?!?! :PPPP oh well... as least I got my question answered.

rotary-tt 02-11-02 11:15 AM

My FD smells like shit, expecially at startup and I don't have a midpipe. I do have an intake and cat-back and run the stock cpu. So it seems to run too rich when cold (black smoke). Also, many FD's suffer from many oil leaks which leak fumes into the cabin. I fixed my pan, then the front cover started to leak. Now oil all over the motor and the exhaust will make you stinky. I need to pull it all apart myself because I don't feel like having Mazda charge me $1200 to fix a $15 front cover gasket. The turbo oil return lines also tend to leak.

You need a good running FD without oil leaks not to get stinky...

PS. My totally stock FC was also stinky at startup, even with a new motor.

pluto 02-11-02 03:51 PM

Really??? lucky girl she is!!! J/K hehehe

If your car is stinky with a CAT then it has A PROBLEM
over rich Black smoke at startup can be due to leaky injectors or a bad AWS.

jd93rx7 02-11-02 04:13 PM

I've got HKS catback, downpipe, exhaust and don't smell any exhaust. I do smell burning oil from my leaking turbos :( But, I don't smell like it, just the car does.

kris 02-11-02 04:25 PM

Oh my god you can kick your leg high.....i love you

MaxRX7 02-11-02 04:49 PM

the only way you'll smell, is if the car has no cats and you have the windows down and/or the moonroof open while driving or waiting at a stoplight for a long time.

DyanaT 02-11-02 11:44 PM

Hey guys, thanks again for posting answers to my questions. LOL, whats really funny is that a random friend of mine told me the stinky thing, not my b/f. ;) ;) ;)
BUT, thanks again, you guys are awesome at getting questions answered.
AND whoever said girls and cars dont mix....*rolleyes*

Flybye 02-11-02 11:49 PM

My suggestions...

1) Walk by the FRONT of the FD when turned on
2) If you MUST remove something from the trunk, then make sure the engine is off
3) When at a standstill for a long period of time, try to have the windows up and the sunroof (if so equipped) closed.
4) Don't go to work without taking a shower after you just finished working on the FD ;)

Follow these simple guidelines, and you should be ok :bigthumb:
