GReddy Type M Intercooler

So I was thinking of putting the Type M intercooler kit on my FD. I just wanted to know what you guys think of it. My FD already has a full 3" Downpipe with the 3" racing beat catback, Trust intake, and a chiped ECU. Im going to put the batter in the pass side storage bin this weekend.

Does it fit in easy. It looks like it may be hard to get it in there with the ac condenser. Any input would be great thanks guys.

YOUWSH 09-17-07 11:36 PM

Installation of Greddy Intercooler's are all very similar regardless of whether its a type M. Do a search plenty of photos and notes about the install.

All i can say is it is getting time for a upgraded ECU instead of a Chiped one.

Its not that hard, you just have to trim the reinforced bumper and some metal, nothing big, mount up the rad. and as for the AC, i just removed it so im not to sure about that, but it should come with something for that just like it does for the PS lines....

I had no problem with my Pettit ECU while my car had full 3", intake and FMIC running 14 psi with 94 octane.

Like stated above, The Greddy kit will come with the stuff to relocate the radiator and power steering cooler. The A/C condenser will require some bending of the hoses but nothing major.

I would recommend an upgraded radiator if you are going o put a FMIC and a clutch though.

greddy tech has a section on the v-spec, id assume it would be very similar

yea i hate those damn japanese instructions... funny thing to do is to get your 56 year old dad to help, and then he asks for the instruction booklet, and u laugh a little as u hand it to him

ghost-rider 09-19-07 12:06 PM

Installing the kit is relatively easy, I just put one on my car about 2-3 weeks ago, just make sure to take your time with the a/c lines so that they do not crack.

MR_Rick 09-19-07 12:53 PM

^ either that or go the route I went. I replaced my with braided lines.

HKNY 09-19-07 08:57 PM

Im happy with my M Spec. It's not the easiest install but if your mechnically inclined you'll be fine.

CMonakar 09-19-07 09:53 PM

Get something else.

fcdrifter7 09-21-07 04:16 PM

Thanks for all the help guys. I went and ordered it so it should be here in a few days.

fcdrifter7 09-24-07 09:16 AM

It just came in time to start working! AC and the air pump are just getting removed

fcdrifter7 09-25-07 07:53 PM

Well got the intercooler on and the bumper suport cut. Put the new mounts on for the rad. Due to getting parts and then rain we didn't get much done. I got all of the AC parts out today its not going back in.

Looking good. Must suck working on the side of the street...

fcdrifter7 09-25-07 10:27 PM

Yeah by the time I had the bumper suport cut the ac pump out and the lines removed it started to rain. after the rain I got the rad mounted in but it was to dark to keep going.

looks nice :icon_tup:

Looks like yours is headed for the body shop, like mine

fcdrifter7 09-26-07 02:25 PM

I put an order in for the belt and pulleys to remove the air pump. Tats gives me some more work to do.

fcdrifter7 09-30-07 10:51 AM

So I got the car back together today before work. Started up ran fine. Took it down the road and once the 2nd turbo kicked in the intercooler pipe can out of the boost tubes. Put it back in place did it again and same thing. The clamps they gave me suck I had the same problem with the upper rad hose when I was filling it. So after work I have to go and getter better clamps to hold the tubes in place.

On a good note when the first turbo was going it felt really good.

fcdrifter7 10-01-07 06:25 PM

I love it. with the ac and the power steering removed the new ecu and the fmic its quick.

Rx_Sam 10-02-07 06:37 PM

Did you had to cut a lot of metal for the pipes ?

There wasn't much cutting. I had to cut the bumper out and the bumper reinforcement (not metal) there was a small piece of metal that needed cut under the hood but it was easy to do.

Rx_Sam 10-08-07 11:16 AM

do you got pics from what you've cut from metal ?

Ill have to try and get my camera in the spot for you. Its really easy if you look at the link posetd in page one they directions show where you need to make the cut. I ended up going with the autobahn 88 kit. Im suber happy with the kit and for $450 it was priced just fine.

I am thinking the same thing. It was on my speed 6 for about 3 months already.

SLOASFK 10-08-07 07:44 PM

At least it's on the cold side :) It stands a fighting chance over there.

hahaha I almost put it on the hot side and then i was like wtf am I doing.

fcdrifter7 10-10-07 04:49 PM

Ok so with the new ic and the ecu my Type S can no longer hold boost. Iv made the spring tighter and that didn't work. I then took the BOV apart and cleaned it out. It still doesn't hold boost. I here there is a spring that can replace the two but I don't know where I can find it. any help would be great.

fcdrifter7 10-10-07 08:27 PM

Im making a flang this weekend and putting it on the intercooler pipe on the cold side. Maybe that will help.

rx7-r1 10-11-07 12:23 AM

where did u get the kit from?

Jason 10-12-07 10:37 AM

Thats not a greddy intercooler but a knock off. Nothing wrong with it other than it uses the stock elbow instead of the Greddy elbow.
With shipping on that it comes out to more than the Greddy that we sell.

To take off the front bumper there is 3 screws on each side holding the bumper to the fenders. I just turned my wheel and pulled the liner out and there is 2 right there and 1 at the very top. Also need to remove the bolts holding the undertray/lip under the bumper and the mounting plate in the engine bay. 1 screw for each of the turn lamps also.

GEO147 03-21-08 10:33 PM

All the info that I have read on installing this FMIC leads me to believe that I will have to change to a smaller battery and maybe even change my intake setup!

Another couple of Qs:
1. I have the a HKS intake, im not sure but I think its a powerflow or something. Its an old model with twin intakes and longish 3inch wide black rubber tubing. Q is will I have to change this to the Greddy AirNX????

2. I have seen many pictures of the smaller battery (PC680 or whatever its called) In all the pics of the smaller battery I have seen it looks like it has female connections that would not mate with the stock power lead lug setup!Q is how does the PC680 mate up to the stock pos/neg power leads that connect to a normal battery??

Sorry if these Q's are a bit simple...but when I go to do this mod I want to be ready!!

Thanks.

GEO147 03-24-08 10:58 PM

So you just replaced the rubber HKS tubing with intercooler type tubing then?? What tubing did you use and where u get it??

I know that the stock front bumper has to be cut to get the Greddy M spec in!!

Can anyone tell me if I will still have to cut into this aftermarket Vertex front bumper to install the Greddy M Spec FMIC??

http://i29.tinypic.com/23sslxd.jpg

Thanks.

you can get a kit from rx7store.com. its about 50.00. you can always cut it to fit. it took me over an hour to position my intakes to fit between the airpump and the frame without having them rub together or stick outa my bay. the greddy intakes also are an option. they fit any of the greddy intercoolers

the bumper does not need to be cut. its the bumper rebar. and also possibly a few knotches in the front end bottom guard, for mounts.

if you are using another type of rebar for your vertex bumper, such as the 99 spec rebar(for 99 spec bumper). then you will need to cut into it according to where you mount the intercooler.

GEO147 03-26-08 07:43 PM

I just purchased this replacement intake piping kit from RX7store http://www.rx7store.net/category_s/107.htm will this do the trick or will it need modification aswell??

Also, What cutting/bending tools will need?

Looked at the Greddy installation booklet and find it hard to see what it is talking about at times, especially the shaded areas....getting worried??

I had the Greddy V-SPL kit, and mine did the exact same thing. I was just going down the road testing it out. WOT it was flying until the transition, when the the IC pipe came off. The clamps I had were good, I just didn't tighten it down all the way.

I agree, it does make a world of a difference. Mine felt so much smoother, especially at top end. Clean install, looks good!

93RedDragonFD 03-26-08 10:10 PM

I'm also running the Greddy M-Spec FMIC, curious to know what a safe range of (rwhp) is considering its a step down from the V-Spec. Anyone know...

Btw good work bro!
