All the roll-cage and fire extinguishers won't protect from dumb ass drivers ... You do your best to squezze every dime you can out of her insurance and screw up her premium .

MAN this thread puts a frown on my face.

I'm so sorry you had to experience something like this in your lifetime, and considering you've barely had yours longer than myself...it gives me that "hits close to home" feeling.

I have to be honest, I would ALWAYS reccommend full-coverage on a car like an FD. I HAVE to pay for it because I'm financing mine, but even still, it's such a rare car, and shit DOES happen, whether it's your fault or not, but it's nice to know that you're only out-of-pocket for $500.

Again, I'm sorry, I hope everything works out in the end for you. I'm glad to hear you weren't injured.

I dunno.....it sounds like there was no "fault" assigned. If there wasn't (i.e. no ticket issued to the other driver) then it becomes "no fault" and then it is just you and your insurance. The other person's will pay only for their damage. And if you only have liability, your NOT going to get ANY money for repairs.

Yes, full coverage IS recommended, but in reality it isn't enough. You can EASILY do more damage to an FD than what the insurance considers they are "worth". Now, the good thing is you can usually buy them back at a very small price when they are "totalled". It is of course much, MUCH better to get $10K or more as opposed to a kick in the nuts (i.e. $0) if you have the misfortune to total your FD, but a better way to go is to get additional insurance. I've friends with muscle/show cars that have them insured for a flat amount, such as $25K. There is no depriciation, you get the full amount of what you have them insured for or a suitable EXACT replacement in the event of a 'total loss'. The problem is that most of the companies that provide this type of insurance have strict guidelines, often the cars have to be at least 15 - 20 years old, NOT a daily driver, and can be driven only XXXX number of miles per year. Most standard insurance companies WILL allow you to list anything that adds to the value of your car, however be prepared for a let-down if you think you can tell them, "yeah, I've got $10K in this awesome show-winning stereo system so I want to be sure and cover that...."
Even with receipts you'll only get a percentage because the insurance companies:
  • HIGHLY depreciate things like that and
  • will tell you that while that was important to YOU, it doesn't make diddly-squat to someone else. In other words, it doesn't add to the value of the car.
Now obviously there are HUGE differences between insurance companies' policies regarding such things, it really does behoove one to carefully read your policy's terms, conditions, and restrictions.

Bottom line for full coverage is yes, it IS worth it if you have premiums that aren't too costly. If however you are having to pay $500 a month for full coverage insurance then every two years you are paying for the car all over again. NOT worth it.

Ask yourself - what's frame damage, on a unit-body car? The cars are not one big metal frame from the factory - they're welded together in modules. Now granted, one can significantly damage the "core" sections of a car, but from the looks of yours it's mainly front end.

how much do you guys think it would cost to repair things on the car?

wrankin 01-01-06 08:44 AM

it would most likely be cheaper to buy a replacement FD.

See what insurance is going to do first. Then you can figure out what your options are...

G's 3rd Gen 01-01-06 08:59 AM

As ugly as it looks that is fixable...

turbodrx7 01-01-06 12:06 PM

That looks very fixable. Body panels..suspension and your good to go. It doesnt look like any major damage has been done. Engine is still sitting "center" and straight. But i dont know about how much your passenger shock tower is pushed in. See what insurance says, go from there...about all you can do man. Good luck

turbojeff 01-01-06 12:38 PM

I'd guess that the damage is similar to the MB FD I had fixed. The strut tower is obviously moved over a few inches.

How is the firewall and door jamb?

For insurance purposes it is beyond totalled. If you found a GOOD bodyman and a J-spec front clip and stripped it down yourself you could probably fix it for $4K or so.

Jeff

Ranger Yi 01-02-06 02:12 AM

yea the shock tower is pretty bad.. and theres a huge lump on the passenger floor.. the passenger door jam is off and several other minor things. .i think im just going to part the car out and wait for another FD to come my way..

dclin 01-02-06 03:13 AM

Ouch, sorry for your loss. I know it does not feel like it, but at least you're lucky you still have your health. I've seen heavy toll on the human body from car accidents.

Given that it was the other party's fault, go after them. Even if they do not have insurance, they are liable and are responsible. Given that they have an outstanding warrant, it doesn't look good, but it's worth figuring out if you have any options other then eating the cost yourself.

I'm also assuming you do not have uninsured motorist coverage, but still try to contact your insurance company to see what they can do. At they very least, they might offer some other ideas.

Red Suns 01-02-06 03:42 AM

Sorry to hear about your ride. :( Glad to hear no one was really hurt. Man, if there's a lump on the passenger floor, there should be some major buckling going on in there. Any pics from the right side? I'm kinda curious to what got kinked/pushed back to cause that lump. Ever thought of selling the whole thing outright?

Ranger Yi 01-02-06 01:09 PM

i dont have full coverage.. i have 1.5 insurnace... they dont cover collision. i have liability and comprehensive coverage only.. and its still not determined whos at fault right now. and if it ends up being my fault then i lose out alot on the car.. and would most likely part it out.... i think the engine is still ok.. i looked in there seen a hose come off and a couple of the hoses from the m2 intake were pinched.. but it started and the idle was fluctuating though..

If you were in the left lane, and she in the right, and she made a left turn across your lane, she's at fault. Doesn't matter if you were passing her or not, you have possesion of your lane...unless you were passing her on the shoulder, if there was one? What intersection was the accident at?

The car of my dreams lasted on 3 months.. the car hit on the passenger side headlight.. which then smashed my frame hard enough that the center console in the car is tilted up and who knows else .. engine starts but idle fluctuates.. most likely a total loss and i'll be tearing that car apart when i buy it back from the insurnace.. and one more. thing.. i didn't have full coverage. which clicked into my head right when the cars hit..

Man I would have got out of the car PISSED.

:Kill1:

Ranger Yi 01-02-06 11:08 PM

it was a 2 way street .. so i was passing her during oncoming traffic. but the lines are dotted so i have the option to pass and there was no on coming traffic
