fuel thermosensor function

I had a fuel thermosensor trouble code and I found that the wiring harness was not providing the 5 V reference voltage to the connector, and that the fuel thermosensor has the correct resistance. I guess I'm going to have to run a new set of wires to the sensor from the ECU (I do not feel like pulling the whole harness and actually repairing the original wires...) But before I do all of that .... Does anyone know what the ECU uses the fuel thermosensor for? I don't feel like running the lines if it is not really needed.....
