FD's with Open Diffs?

At first I believed that factory they all came with Torsen LSD's, now I'm not so sure. Especially after putting my car up on a lift and spinning the rear tires manually. Generally when the car has an LSD when one wheel is turned the other should turn the same way at the same speed. Mine does neither... After a while I decided that after the 5 speed swap I must have picked up an LSD that wasn't from a 3rd gen... I checked a totally bone stock unmodified 5 speed FD on the same lift. Behold it did the same thing... So my question would be, does the Torsen LSD act diffirently than a normal clutch based Limited Slip?

(Excuse me if the question is dumb)

i encounted the same thing.....then i turned the driveshaft by hand, both tires spun.

the torque from the engine engauges the plates that locks both tires with a torsen rear end. i'm not sure but spinning one tire by hand doesn't lock to the point of both tires spinning. My Kaaz 2-way for my 240sx spun both tires by hand but i think it just has to do with how the torsen works under load. I just shot this out there if anyone else has a better example go ahead explane it.

Yes. What you witnessed is perfectly normal for a Torsen.

A Torsen is not a clutch based diff; it uses the friction from sets of helical gears to split torque between the axles. No clutches. The Torsen has to see at least some load from one of the axles in order to function as a limited slip. If one of the axles has zero load it will function as an open diff and merely spin the unloaded tire.

The gears inside the Torsen determine how much a difference it will allow in the torque split between the two axles but each axle must have at least some load. The Torsen is not a locking diff, it is merely limited slip.

There are absolutely no plates or locking going on inside a Torsen. It is not a clutch type diff.

thanks for the info DamonB I was basing my anwser off my old kaaz 2-way. which now i know is a totally different unit.
