Unhappy FD Odometer Failure

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience with fixing the FD's digital odometer. The whole display went blank one day. Speedo and all other instruments work fine. I had about 68K on the meter before it went out.

I've seen it in a few fd's. Its really bad for the resale value if you ever try to sell it. I suggest you fix it soon .

It may just be the lighting or a bad connection, I would take the guages out and check for corrosion on the circuits.

If you take it to a Mazda dealer they can extract your milage from the ECU as it is also stored in there -- if you need a new cluster maybe buy one with a good ODO and Speedo but all the others are trashed just to save money, swap the odo/speedo in with your current good gauges and have the dealer correct the milage.

Most of the time the odometer is fine, it's the backlighting that goes out and makes you think it's dead. Take a flashlight and shine it on the odometer while the key is on. If you can make out a very faint ghost of the readings the odometer is in fact fine and you just need to replace the bulb.

Thanks guys. I talked to the dealer today and he told me most likely I will need to replace the whole cluster ($400+labor). I'll do some troubleshooting first.

You can just replace the bulb, I believe there's a (Zer0banger) thread that explains how to swap the ABS light with the odometer light bulb.

That can't be true, or else when you switched out gauges your mileage would stay the same/
