The Rx7 is not a dated design because of something like its roundness. If anything, I would argue that its roundness is one of the things that prevents it from being dated. In the 70's the angular wedge was the style-in-time trendy thing to do. The Japanese and Bangle brought in the creased edge, bird's eye headlight style that is nearly universal today. But, round, voluptuous designs seem to survive all the trendy stuff. The FD is voluptuous, but taut and has few and simple shut lines. While I disagree with maybe half or a third of their list, the FD will continue to show up on these kinds of lists from now on. Gordon I think it's not its roundness but its plainness (in a good way) is what makes RX7 acceptable still today. The more detail a car has in it's body the quicker it seems to age so I agree with you RX7s few and simple shut lines are its advantage.

Exactly. Organic, pure designs tend to last through the trends.... the FD could have been made today (with minor detail changes), or in the 1960's. It absolutely outlasted every one of it's contemporaries... even the stuff being made by Ferrari and Lotus at the time.... maybe except for the 911, which was largely the same design through the 993 since the late 60's. One can argue, a better design is the one that lasts longer and I agree with this but on the contrary a better design can be the one which is more daring, which leaves a mark behind but ages rather quick. Also there is the psychological part, we will love this car and it's design no matter how old it is, like the first day we saw it. Most of us have been dreaming about it or drooling over one ever since. So our eyes may see different then a NSX owners eye as NSX owner was probably drooling over a NSX ever since. In the end these are all subjective anyway and beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we all agree RX7 is beautiful and timeless for us and that's what matters ;) :icon_tup: |
The NSX is permanently stuck in the mid 80s/early 90s in terms of aesthetics in my book, a primary reason I would never own one. Whenever I see one I think mid 40s guy who liked to watch "Knight Rider"....underpowered and outdated
The FD IS timeless, it is still one of thr bext looking cars out there riding on a nice set of 18" wheels, the rear of the car is nicer than the 997 |
I don't want this to turn into NSX vs RX7 argument. NSX was just an example. Like I said beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that list is too small to add all cars with great design. For me it's missing many cars like F355, Enzo etc.

Where is the FC????? I love mine. But O well.

80% of those cars, I have a hard time appreciating. I can think of several other cars that give me wood, much like the FD. :)

I wish they would have shown a VR or MB FD .. and without the front license plate, I hate that@!
but yeah, some people think my fd is a new car, not just because it looks good (paint, wheels, etc), but because it's looks could make it a new car even for today. |

The list is also missing Pontiac Aztek. After I drink a few bottles it just looks beautiful to me, I wanna make love to it :D

lol
The 350Z gets my ugly award in the sports car world, and is it just me, or is Audi reinventing ugly? The shot of their current line up is barf-worthy When happened to graceful lines and curves? Ferrari is the originator of beauty and they consistently get it right |

I think Audi's line up is the sexiest range out there right now (for normal cars). A4, A5 and R8 are pure sex inside and out.

The 997 still looks good depsite it's relatively unchanged shape over the years. The R8 got it's ass kicked by the 997 in the recent battle of the Supercars, that episode was alot of fun. |
I don't particularly like any of those real old cars on the list, well maybe the Ford GT40 isn't bad. Out of the cars built in the last 20 years, I think only the Aston and Alfa Romeo 8C look better but those cars are rather new and cost 5+ times the cost of a new FD.
Out of it's contemporaries like the NSX and the Supra, I think the FD has a more time-less design. Other contemporaries like the 300ZX and the 3000GT are just junk compared. I don't even see those cars around anymore as I think they all have died by now. |
I remember when the FD came out I did not like it because of all the curves and it's forward thinking design. I thought the door handles were stupid. However I was wrong as a 10 year old, it is one of the most beautiful sports cars. I never liked the car designs in the 90's really until the Viper GTS and C5 vette came out I only liked the 993 and f355.
The only part of the FD that is truly outdated besides the headlights are the Window Seals on the doors. For some reason they scream 90's. |
IMO, the FD3S is the best looking Japanese car ever, with the Toyota 2000GT and the 240Z close behind.
