Extending SMIC intake duct into airstream

While I was underneath the front of the car checking on a leaking coolant hose (repaired), I noticed that the intake of my stock IC duct (have a Greddy SMIC) doesn't really protrude into the airstream at all. Thus, it depends on complete sealing of the car's intake nacelle in order to insure good airflow to the IC. After staring at the duct over a beer and thinking about what I could do to get more airflow into the duct, I cut a piece of old fender well liner (its curvature perfectly matched that of the IC duct's intake) and fashioned an intake scoop that directly forces air into the IC duct. I pop-riveted the scoop to the stock IC intake, and fastened the outer leading edges to the fiberglass bumper support. I don't have an instrument to measure intake temps, but after comparing the heat soak by placing my hand on the IC, there was a definite decrease in temp (even though ambient temps are pretty cool at the moment), especially after extended boost acceleration. No noticeable increase in coolant temps (linearized stock temp gauge) that would indicate the scoop is robbing too much airflow.

Looks pretty ghetto at the moment (although you have to look into the radiator nacelle to see it), so no photos unless someone wants any. I'll fabricate something better later this weekend. But thought I'd mention a mod that isn't really mentioned all that much (if at all) that can definitely help performance.

Better ducting is always a good thing.

I went to home depot and purchased a role of aluminum heat tape to seal the gap between the IC duct and IC (PFS SMIC). This forced all the airflow into the IC.

Homemade mods are the best.
