engine numbers

Where are the engine numbers stamped? I'm looking to buy an RX7, and I'd like to know so that I can tell if the engine has been replaced. How do I read the numbers to know if the engine is what came with the car---does the engine number match the car's VIN number?

One more question: when a rotary motor is fully rebuild, is it uncommon for the rotors to have to be replaced? Is this only done if the engine was seriously damaged, or is it pretty routine?

The engine number does not match the VIN number. There is no easy way to know if it's the original motor or not.
