Question Engine cleaning?

What do you guys use and the proper steps before you guys try to clean your engine. I got the good old "Gunk" engine cleaner at home, but I heard somewhere that we should cover certain things before cleaning the engine.

I've heard of Simple Green being used too.

Simple Green is very corrosive to aluminum and so is a bad choice for cleaning any of the numerous aluminum parts in an RX-7s engine bay. do a search and you will find my posts about the FAA warning to Aircraft owners & mecanics about using Simple Green to clean Aluminum.
