Question Engine Cleaning

How do you clean your engine and engine bay. Whenever I look at the pictures you guys post every thing looks very clean. My engine and engine bay look like it just came out of a moat. Are you steam cleaning your engines, using de-greasers or just water? My FD runs very strong and I am afraid of using a chemical, or detergent based product that might potentially hurt the wiring harness or other componets. Thanks for any info. P.S. I did try searching for information.
