Electrical problem with speedo?

Situation:
Last weekend went to drive the car and the odometer was not displaying and so I figured I would search for the cause later. Tonight I go to take the car for a spin and as I'm driving away from the driveway I now notice the speedo and tach aren't working. Then they bounce to life for a second and then die. Next the tach rolls over to 9k rpm (the tach not the engine) and stays there. Seconds later the engine light comes on, so back to the garage I go. Shut down the engine and the tach still reads 9k. Check the codes and it comes back 06 Speedometer Sensor. Why would the tach fail too? Could this be a harness problem?

Thanks guys.

Steve

speedometer

Well, one things certain. Theres nothing electrical about the speedo, its just a cable to the transmission, unfortunately im not sure where it is. My speedo isnt working either, pulled the wrong plug somewhere and now its loose somewhere.

i beleive its an electronic speedo and dash. its a little more complex than just a cable i think.

as for the speedo thing the solder joints in em go bad and crack and such, its fairly common. lotsa people just take em apart and resoder them. now i dont know if thats your problem but it may help.

roto is right, the speedometer is electronic. The speed sensor signal is routed from the trans to the ecu where it in turn goes to the electronic speedometer. The RPM signal i believe has to travel through the speedo and then to the tach. IF there is a problem with the circuitry on the speedometer then you can have issues with the tach.

I had a failed tach and speedometer just a few months ago and my fix was replacing the speedometer unit. Thankfully i had a spare cluster with a bad tach so i just swapped the good speedometer and all my problems were solved. I also had the speed sensor DTC as well and it checked out good. Upon further inspection of the bad speedo I noticed a burnt transistor.

I would pull the cluster and do a thorough visual inspection.
