Efini twins or BNR Stage IIIs?
Quick question to all interested: Which would you go with between the two? And why?
Personally, I am leaning towards the Efini units. Does anyone have any details about them such as who makes the compressors, etc? Are they rebuildable? Which would be the better choice overall? |
Check this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/time-slips-dyno-121/finally-bnr-stage-3-high-boost-dyno-results-442095/ He is very pleased with his.

Yeah, I had read (and drooled over!) that thread many times, but....Goodfella's set-up is so much different than mine. I am staying sequential for one, and while I'll have a street port I don't know how it compares to what he did, and I will be running the stock ECU since I have an automatic (at least for now, until I find the 'perfect' aftermarket ECU setup that will keep the transmission's features intact).
Hell....I've even thought about going single, but I think I'll face even more problems that way, ECU-wise. It is just crazy that replacing turbochargers is as much as the cost of a new engine....sigh. |
Have you read Tim Benton's thread about his 99 twins?
|
I had 99 twins on my car and was pleased with them. But from what i have read the BNR III's would have made me a lot more happy. For the money i don't think the 99's are worth it, i regret buying mine instead of just going single turbo like i am now. =)

Better build up your auto, the power you can make on either BNR's or Efini's are way more then enough to blow your auto tranny. Mine barely held on past 300hp. I would take the money your going to spend on BNR's or Efini's and do a swap, you won't be dissapointed, and you won't be limited to chipped ECU's or Piggyback systems. |
bajaman,
Unless you are going to convert to a manual, get the '99 Spec twins. |
Thanks, Mahjik.
I should have prefaced all this with saying I am staying very conservative, due primarily to the restrictions of the automatic. I am not out to make monstrous hp, a slight bump up from stock with excellent driveability and high longevity are what is important. I thought I was going to be able to reuse my stock turbos, though the 93K miles on them was a concern, but upon closer examination the 'front' turbo has some significant damage to the exhaust side turbine impellers, due to the apex seals shooting thru them. My goal is to be somewhere around 280 crankshaft hp, using my downpipe, RB catback, modified airbox, and new turbos. Seems do-able, with potential for more down the road if/when I want or need it. |
Some of my thoughts on the matter are in my rebuild thread, especially in posts 60-70...also posts 105-110.

You cant run BNR's on a stock ECU...Right?

It's overpaying for mods made to make more power at high boost - boost you'll never see. So why pay for it? There are a tons of low mileage OEM twins on the market if you need to replace you stockers, and they're a LOT cheaper than the BNRs or the 99s. Having said that, from the feedback and dyno sheets, if I were going for max power, I'd take the BNRs over the 99specs any day of the week, and never look back. No comparison.
I have run the gamut of convictions on this whole turbo issue several times, originally thinking I would just go for the RX-7 Store Rebuilt ones, but recent threads about suspect rebuilds (regardless of where they come from) made start thinking, "okay, so I spend a grand and don't know what I might be getting, or I spend $2500 and get something brand new..." If someone has or knows of someone that has some good, low-mileage OEM units, I am definitely interested. |

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hlight=rebuild It seems my money would be somewhat wasted on EITHER the BNRs or the Efinis.....? |

bajaman, keep an eye on the 3rd gen section for sale. I know you're not new or anything, but try searching w/ different terms, once with "twins" and once with "turbos." Ppl list 'em as diff things. But they ARE available. I've seen a few sets recently.
Also, not sure how you define low mileage, but IF you're interested, I have a set of non-seq twins w/ 60K on 'em, converted to full non-seq @ 50K by Steve Kan (so it's a full non-seq. conversion). I'm gonna get 'em inspected by PFS before I sell, but they should be in excellent condition. PM me if that's something that may interest you. ~Ramy |
Also, PM Japan2LA. He has a set of low mileage twins IIRC. Here's the link where he talks about 'em: https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...05&postcount=5
jamespond24 also apparently has a set too (from the same thread as above) ~Ramy :) |

Greg...haha...that's funny. Anytime man :)
You know that checking the FS section is the only way you're gonna find a set, right? ;) ~Ramy |

sorry to horn in on the thread, but what would make the bnr setup a bit of a waste in a stock fd??? I am also looking at having to replace the turbos on my FD. I first purchased what was supposed to be a good 20k set, but still have a small leakage problem. A little shy of trying another set of "good, used" twins, and am trying to research all options. |
|
I managed to snag a nice set of used turbo's for $200 that don't leak or anything, so just keep your eye out. As I said, I would spend that $200 for now and use the rest of the cash you save by doing so for a swap unless your hell bent on sticking with an auto. But I had no problem trashing my auto on the stock twins with just bolt ons. I even liked driving it as an auto so I was kind of sad, but my frown turned upside down when I did the manual swap. In the long run I will probably step to BNR's or Efini's myself as I love the sequential system, the early on smooth power delivery is nice, but I don't expect the stockers I have in my car now to live to long since I am pushing them to 14 psi. Being able to run the BNR's is sounding sexy to me right now.
