9) What is an R1? What is a touring?

Different trim levels. The R1 was the sport version in 1993, and the R2 was the equivalent sport version from 94-95. R1/R2s have different suspension, synthetic suede seat covers, an extra oil cooler, front lip and rear spoiler, were not available with automatic transmissions, and more. The Touring (similar to the PEP and PEG) has conveniences like Bose stereo, leather seats, moonroof. The Base model could have some of these options added. It is possible to mix/match some things both from the factory and on your own. See the links for detailed info.

the info is in the sticky atop this section!

Yeah, thats pretty much it. Also, R1/R2's werent available with cruise control or a rear wiper along with the other options listed above. However, that was from the factory, and when the cars got to the lot, sometimes dealers would add other options to any of the cars. Meaning some R1/R2's ended up with leather seats instead of suede, a moonroof, and some touring's ended up with the R1 lip and spoiler.

Best way to check exactly what came off of the factory line and what was possible added by a dealer, is to register your VIN with MazdaUSA and have them look up all the information.

Just give mazda a call, or i think you can do it online, but register your VIN and they can check what model you have
