Jacked up the car yesterday and notice the diff was leaking quite abit. Can you guys look at the picture and tell me whether my diff is on its way out or simply an oil seal I need to replace.

The other photo is off one of the Diff bushings, I notice liquid coming out of it and I could also spin around that rubber thing next to it where my finger is. The cars been clunking from the rear for a while and suspension shop has said my other bushes are fine but I'm sure they forgot all about the diff bushes so would this help things out?

Also the final picture I notice a hose leading from a canister to nowhere??

One or both of your diff side seals is slinging lube oil up over everything, including those diff bushings. The bushings may be shot but you cannot tell until you remove the carrier. The cannister vent is normal

It's the diff bushings....a buddy of mine with the same problem stated he cut one open and it was "liquid" filled. He installed new set of OEMs. I on the other hand have the Super Pro bushings.....they ROCK!!!

 

Stock diff bushings are oil filled, but they don't carry that much oil.

It's your main (front) diff seal. FSM shows how to change it out.

 

I've ordered some Superpro bushings as they are made here locally so will be doing that next week. As for the leak on my diff...do I simply have to replace these side seals or get a new diff altogether?

Also I don't think I've ever change the diff oil in the 3 years I've had this car which can't be good.

 

Mine was almost like that and it was a side seal, it was obvious from the sling pattern which one was bad. Your leak has been around for a while. I would say clean the up diff, drive it some and recheck it to sure which one it is (you might want to put in some oil first ). The hardest part is getting the axle out. I used a big crow bar and a lot of grunt. Your diff should be ok, but you shouldn't let it run low on oil. As I remember the seal is pretty cheap.

my car looks the same, dirty with oil in the rear end area... my mech did say my diff bushings were on their way out the door.... good thing i already have a set of superpro bushings waiting !!!!

 

I suggest you drain the diff and check the oil before deciding if it's simply seal replacement time or if there is more to the problem.

Worn bearings can cause seal leaks, so if the oil is jet black and loaded with super-fine glitter, the problem is bearings. If the oil is clean then you know it's just a seal issue.

I've got superpro diff bushings as well. Been meaning to change them for a while... but am planning to do it on Monday... or at least start lol. Good luck!

 

Keep us updated when you do the bushings... I started mine yesterday! The bolts are so tight!!! I've got the bolts off that connect to the bushings, but the bolts on the diff mount are even tighter! haha... if it wasn't for the tightness, I would be finished already! Good luck!
