Dave Barninger 3rd Gen Single Plug Mod
Dave came up with a single plug mod for the 3rd gen a few years back.
Does anyone have details.
My 94 R2 was modded and has sat for 5 years.
Local guys are not Rotary geeks.
Hoped to do simple tune up, but not sure what to tell them
Many thanks
Tony D

Supposed to prevent detonation by deleting the trailing plugs altogether.
Not exactly ideal IMO...... I'll happily enjoy my water/meth injection and run all four plugs
Also, I've heard Dave is taking a step back from the tuning game due to health issues and Speed1 is now run by someone else.

It was an attempt to prevent detonation as most detonation seems to stem from the trailing plugs. The trailing spark plugs were removed, a machined plug was pressed in, then the spark plugs were screwed back in with wires connected and all to hide the "mod". Mazda went through a lot of effort to engineer 2 plugs per rotor housing, and even 3 on some race motors for a reason. Without them you lose power and efficiency. In my opinion it was a poorly executed bandaid for badly tuned, poorly setup cars. In Dave's defense, ecu and tuning technology wasn't even close to what is available today and some customers will find a way to break even the best setup car. That being said, we haven't blow a motor in the shop in 10+ years.
