something is wrong!!!!!!!!! i have worked for a mazda dealer for 20yrs, and my price is 1870.00 or 1970.00. as far as the labor that is insane. to do the job correctly time must be taken. i am a master tech at mazda and the labor cost given sounds low. you were quoted $2400.00 + tax for the entire job. the engine alone should go for that.....

Cournal. If i were you I wouldnt go around saying that you work for a mazda dealership. Most people here have had bad experiences when taking thier car to the dealerships. Not trying to flame you, just stating a fact.

Will someone who has actually purchased a reman. engine please post and let us now how much they cost. I want to know the actual price, not the "well I heard" and "probably". How much less would it be to rebuild one yourself?

Thanks,
-Charlie

$2200 was the price before tax and labor for the motor alone, with a core exchange

Do they come with a warranty?

i didnt ask about the warranty, for one main reason. total cost after tax and labor went well past 5k, so i just smiled and walked out. You can get a ported motor from Pettit, Rotorsports, or any other respectable rotary tuner for about 4400-5000 total. Granted, a warranty may not be included with the work from a performance shop, you get a few added goodies with the motor such as viton seals, etc.

I do believe that most, if not all Mazda motors come with a warranty though.

i guess the quesiton comes up as to how hard is it to rebuild a rotary by yourself?

it seems much easier than a piston engine as there is no head to rebuild, no valves to shim etc, and you don't have to hone out a block nor do you have to buy new pistons/rods/crank. I assume all that is basically involved is taking it apart, replaceing all the seals, torque everything down and you are ready to go?

Is it really as easy as that or am i missing something? You can still send out the housings to be ported etc, and it all in all it shouldn't cost more than 1000 bucks.

I'd appreicate feedback from those that have actually rebuilt a rotary before? thanks!!

Danny

Not all Mazda dealers or tech blow. Some do and are so bad it gives all the others a bad rap. I take my FD to Mazda all the time. They even install aftermarket parts like my flywheel. No problems with them in 15 years of taking either my 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gen there for service.

$2,200 is list, and about $1,950 with a good discount. Places like KD Rotary get them a little cheaper but they buy in volume...

charliegt!

Ya gotta read the whole thread man.

I just ordered a Mazda Reman. from Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda in Woodbridge, VA. He charges $1950 with your core. Ray was awsome to deal with. He does not charge you for your core up front, he just asks that you return yours within 30 days. Also, he really knows the third gens, and he stocks almost every part under the hood! Overall, I had a VERY good experience with Ray.

Ray's phone number is (703) 490-8170 or (888) 533-3400. I highly recommend them for reman engines, or any other parts for that matter.
This is from my post on page 2 of this thread. It doesn't get much clearer than this.

Ok well i'm rebuilding my own, and it isn't hard, plus i have friends here in town that have rebuilt their own so i'm in luck. To rebuild the whole motor with new housings and port it will cost me under 1500$ so its the best route, plus i get to feel that i'm doing something for my car and saving money!

This assumes that you will be getting new housings with your reman. While it maybe true that Mazda is being forced to use new housings more often in remans due to less core housings being rebuildable it's definitely not guaranteed.
