ChipGuard

Hi, I am currently in the process of having a kit made that is a clear 3m Vynal[SP?] that will go on the stock front bumper to prevent chipping from rocks that strike it. This 3m stuff is used on Huge Rvs to prevent chips and there are a few other Kits for other cars..

A friend of mine owns a buisness that makes these kits and installs them mostly on RVs but has done a few cars.. Im having him make me a kit and was wondering if anyone else may be intrested in this kit.

Well, its clear. So it wont exactly look.. It would follow the bumper line so there wouldn't be any lines. As fast as fitment goest its gotta be layed on to the bumper like a Giant Sticker so that could be a real pain for someone who hasn't done vinal laying before.. I will how ever as soon as it is done and Installed I will take pictures for you and give a price.

There's a shop that does install for these in North Carolina, but they don't have a kit for RX7's. There are also a couple of places that I've found that will custom cut them, but they are insanely expensive. I'm getting my car repainted and would really like to protect the front end. Please keep us updated. If this turns out well I would buy one.

I was looking into getting this done for my car as well, back when my front end was getting painted. I wish you had come up with this before I got my first rock chips.

I am interested in a kit if the price is fair.

In the Bay Area, call Kenny at Clear Armor, 1-800-257-2767 ext.104. They do all the ferrari's and high end stuff around here and may also be able to give you info about someone in your area. I've seen it and it is pretty neat stuff. Tom

You realize if this is a one piece thing how tough it's going to be to apply?

i have the number somewhere for the lady that does the installs for Foreign Cars Italia in greensboro. FCI use her exclusively for the porsches and ferraris. She uses the 3M material sold by a company in N. Wilkesboro. The company doesn't have a specific kit for the FD, but in one day will computer generate one (they have a system where they pull the car in the garage and the computer reads the car outline and then the cut the material). I've seen her work next to someone elses work and hers is night and day better.

I have seen these before and they require notching to mold around all the curves, it's not perfect. That said I like the idea but once you are less than 3 feet away you can tell it's there.

I've seen this done before. You can even put them on your lights so they won't chip either. It's great stuff but you will probably notice a fine line going across your car.

Please keep us posted...I've been researching this myself since I just had my front end repainted, and I'd like this extra bit of insurance. There don't seem to be any premade kits for stock FD bumpers, so this would be awesome. I'm definitely in on this, unless it's stupidly expensive.

Wow, that's expensive. You can buy the bulk material for less than $75.00

I have this on My car and it is not that expensive. If You have a fiberglass front bumper this stuff is a must. I would get it installed By someone who knows what they are doing or it will look like but. I have it on the front bumper, sides, and inside the doors.

Inside the doors? To prevent foot scuffing? I can't imagine that it wouldn't look like *** since the door panels are matte...

I dont think My door entry is matte? I dont think I would be putting this stuff on the plastic door panels?I have aluminum sills that have been covered with this. If You like having your Friends scraping their feet getting in then this **** is not for You, but sure does not look like ***. If it getts messed up U just take it off and get new stuff put on, much cheaper then paint.

Any chance we can lower the cost on this a bit? I can get my bumper repainted for about $700, and I'd only need to do that every 5-7 years, if that, and I would almost rather do that, than stick something on the bumper that might (and probably would) be a royal PITA to get off. At this price, anyway...I might be convinced that it's worth it at a better price.

If we could get 10 people involved I'd be willing to bet that we could get at least 15% off, and with 20, probably 20-25% off that price. If not, I dunno what to say...just the price of having custom work on a fairly rare car done

Cost Me 300.00 CDN for the front, sides, and door entry. The sides are now Cwest so they are harder to do then stock. That is about 210.00 US. Really not that expensive and very easy to take off as it is put on wet with water and then dries. I would just look around at detailling shops that do graphics.

Very nice looking FD, btw. Also, do you know the brand/model of the material you have on your car? Was it cut to specifically fit your car? Who did it?

Just looking for more specifics...

Patrick, I will talk to the Guy who installed it and find out the brand of plastic. Yes it is cut off a roll and there are zero seems, it just looks like a thick clear coat. I also had the front of the hood done but I forgot. You can see a line where the plastic ends but no big deal. I took the car to a show last fall and could not beleive the rock damage on My new paint so I rapaired the stone chips on the nose and put this over it so it wont happen again. It does not help with scraping on the bottom though as the car sits low.
