Can the FD see 200mph?

Just thought I'd ask if anyone has every taken an fd up to that speed? I would think it would be possible:confused:

Racing Beat's FD went over 240 mph.....Im not sure of the members here though.

RxSeven1 01-12-04 08:06 PM

Is that the one in the Bonneville video that "took off".

Factory gear ratios will take you no further than about 190.

Factory power will take you no further than abotu 163

I could have sworn somewhere in the "top speed" thread they figured top end was 204.XX or something.
But that was gearing, I guess you could be right when drag is added in.

Yeah, there's a little thing called air resistance that screws up all the fancy calculations using gear ratios... :)

teamstealth 01-12-04 09:07 PM

i heard the stock gearing is good for 212mph, in a perfect world with 1000hp and no drag :) How true that is, i dont kno

c00lduke 01-12-04 09:42 PM

True as much as air resistance slow you down will that change the max rate at which you wheels will spin in 5th gear at 8k rpm. Its just a thought. And whatever was in the Racing Beat car, i would like the details on the drive train.

The first time, it lifted at I believe 214mph. Then on the second time around, with revised bodywork, it didn't lift off and hit 242.

Off of the RacingBeat website...

Note the addition of the larger rear spoiler and "roof rails" on this car. A 950 HP 3-rotor, 3 turbo 13G engine powered this car to two land speed records. Although it was hoped this car would travel close to 300 MPH, poor weather and salt conditions kept the the top speed to a mere 242 MPH. Mazda announced that production of the RX-7 would cease after the 1995 model year, and the RX-7 Land Speed Project came to a close.

I took mine up to 160 fairly easily, but then again its not stock.......I don't know stock top speed. If you want to go 200 mph your gonna have to upgrade the tranny in some way or the diff internals. Other than that I agree that you wont see anything over 190. And 190 is pushing it extremely hard, I wouldn't try it on stock tranny/diff internals.

jimlab 01-13-04 01:16 AM

According to my calculations, the absolute top speed for a completely stock FD with manual transmission and stock tires is approximately ~165 mph in 5th gear at 6,595 rpm. The limit for a ~360 RWHP FD would be ~194 mph in 5th @ 7,300 rpm.

In both cases, it would take a considerable amount of time to gain the last few mph, which is true with any car as wind resistance eventually fights the available horsepower to a standstill.

My apologies, it was a 3 rotor and a triple turbo setup

RX7SpiritR 01-13-04 02:19 AM

I'm checking on this. Don't know if I believe the triple turbo setup, it is possible but I just don't see it.

scoot rx7 with rear wheel cover had gone and i'v seen at 320 km so about 190? of course it was a video but it was 13b t88, not a 3 rotor.

It was 327kmph = 202.74 mph I'll host the video next week

Unless you're on a dyno, you'd have to be stupid to let go of the wheel to take a picture of how fast you're going, besides that doesn't it strike anyone that the steering wheel is missing ? I think someone's playing with their dash, not to mention someone's about to lean out the car, with such wide open throttle and such little fuel :rolleys:

takes some big nutz to take that picture, heh.

Oh, i see someone has replied before me.

Could be the passenger holding the camera.

Or a dyno shot.

edit: holding the camera, not the wheel.
