Bracket connected to nothing ?

OK here's the story, I'm reconnecting my new downpipe from Corksport and I can feel some resistance (Nothing new to these cars) when I find a bracket just hanging there. The bracket is attached to the tranny by 2 bolts. It sits just toward the front of the main cat up ontop of the exhaust. Whats it for. I had to remove it to make my DP fit, but I tought I better check with the experts before just disregarding it. It has a thread for a bolt on the bottom of it. Also what are the torque specs for the bolts that connect the main cat and dp.

Thanks

The bracket supported the rear end of the precat by bolting to a clamp around the precat pipe. Most aftermarket downpipes don't come with any provision for attachment to a rear support bracket. I have a Pettit downpipe that attaches only to the engine and the cat pipe - no tranny bracket, so I called Pettit about that and Cam told me that a rear bracket was not necessary on a downpipe. They are much lighter than the factory precat that they replace. I had to unbolt it from the tranny for clearance.

I would feel better if a rear support bracket was there, and I thought about fabricating a clamp to attach the downpipe to the factory bracket, but gave up on the idea.

My stainless downpipe has a bracket welded to it, but it wasn't connected to the transmission as it was located about 1" from the threaded hole. When I installed the Random 5" cat. we inserted a 1" tube spacer and used a long bolt to connect that bracket to the transmission.

I've never seen the stock parts so I can't help you there, but I think the question was answered above.

I ALLWAYS make a clamp for a down pipe to that bracket to keep the stress off the turbo, turbos .I have seen single turbos exhaust flanges broken ,so my customers get a clamp made to fit .
