Blowing smoke in/after boost 3rd 4th gear possibly meth or oil?
After a extensive clean up under the hood that took 2 years V mount,grounds remaking whole parts of the wiring harness and generally spending $$$ going over everything underwood and everywhere else we are got the car back on the road and I,m getting a lot of smoke in boost in 3rd and 4th gear,like a embarrassing amount.I thought it may be oil initially and my buddy that has been doing the work rode with me and said it was dumping meth for a second or 2 after it needed to and thats what it looks like to him.
Turbo is a Garrett 35R with 50/50 meth/water running PFC.850 prime 1600 secondary. What does meth look like? ....like oil? I plan to do a new tune partly for some reason mechanically we cannot turn the idle any lower,tuner said can fix and not idling on its own too We have not changed anything in the turbo or motor or fuel pumps just cleaned up a lot of bad workmanship the car was fine before. All we were initially fixing were the electrical gremlins and we just carried away really and started to fix all the little things while we were in there.We replaced all lines with A/N fittings coolant oil and just about everywhere else on the motor. I,m sure we used the same restrictor for the turbo. I had the turbo rebuilt 7 or 8 years ago but not big miles since and wondered if I'm due for oil seals. I took it out again last night by myself and could boost for longer and it smells and looks like oil to me possibly mixed with fuel as well as it seems to hang in the air for a good while. I suppose if it is meth I could pull the fuse and see if there is a difference...at this point it would be a easier fix that a bad turbo oil seal. Thanks in advance. |
What is the smoke color like? White, black, etc.. smells sweet? Faster way to know is to take the down pipe off and look into the turbine , if there is a good amount of oil or little or no oil..

White smoke=water/coolant, i dont know about meth though.

Do you have a catch can setup and the proper oil restrictor for the turbo oil feed?

As far as I know its the same restrictor as it we left it in there before the revamp.
No catch can.....yet. |
Good news, there. No oil from exhaust. I have seen a catch can fix the issue. Same happened to a wrx of a friend of mine.

I have time to think about this and everything was fine unti all the new fittings went on ,nothing else has changed.

The oil dump has a 45 connector at the bottom and horizontal to the motor.

Have you checked the overall health of your engine, compression and plugs? You may want to get a baseline on that before troubleshooting other things. As for the oil return, it won't cause smoking unless somehow it's blocked. The smoke is from something getting into your combustion chamber that's not cleanly burning, i.e. oil, water, gas, etc. It definitely looks like you have oil getting in at your turbo, so that's where you want to start. Running too much AI could cause smoke, but I would try to fix the turbos first. Good luck |
I have red that the oil return line should not have 90° bend and it has to be at least -10AN. There is a confusion for some about the size. If your oil in the turbo is not going out quickly it will look for another way to go out. I would fix the oil return first then engine compresion test if the issue persist.

You absolutely must vent the crank case on a single turbo car. The stock pcv doesn't really work because these cars are almost always on boost. Plug one port on the oil neck and run the other to a vented catch can, or at least run a hose down somewhere to see if it helps. That oil return might also be causing a backup as the stock flange is proprietary and the t3/t4 flange you used might not be lining up correctly, causing a restriction.
