Anyone used the A'PEXi Active Tail Silencer?

I saw this awhile ago and have been wanting to get a pair for my dual N1s, they produce nice power but are a bit too loud just driving around town, especially coming home late. Apparently the ATS uses a pressure activated valve that will silence during normal driving but not hinder power output under WOT:

str8ryd 10-12-06 01:01 PM

+1, I'd like to know the answer to this as well. I've been looking into silencers that won't diminish power and with this particular unit it seems like you'll be making little to no sacrifice. Even if I don't hear from people I guess I'll still go ahead and purchase this part. I already KNOW I'll be getting pulled over if I come across a cop on the streets so I guess anything will help :D.

BTW - I have an HKS Ti Racing Exhuast and YES it's loud :). It's not too bad for me, but I really think other (normal) people will HATE it!

themcneal 10-12-06 02:38 PM

I have these on my Apexi N1 Dual:

http://www.apexi-usa.com/product_exh...=182&pageNum=1

They definitely reduce the noise, which was my main concern, as I didn't want to draw too much attention and I was setting off car alarms left and right when I drove by them when they were parked. Also I just remove them when I go to the track. Very simple to install and remove. I am not sure about the effect on the power, but it wasn't anything that I found to be too noticeable (at least in my car).

I've used that on my GT Spec exhaust and it makes a huge difference in power. But then again I'm running a large single turbo setup with race port. It creates alot of back pressure but it does lower the exhaust db substantially. I had it on for about 20 minutes and took it off. I just turn up the radio! :-)

str8ryd 10-12-06 08:08 PM

What about the Active Tail Silencer? Anyone use that specifically? From their website it says that the difference from "dyno numbers" with and w/out the silencer are nearly identical. If nobody has this, then I guess I'll be the first to post regarding its potential. I'll be having my car dynoed in 2-3 weeks and I'll ask my tuner to run the car with and w/out and hopefully I can have some real numbers for everyone. Later.

Theres also this by A'PEXi....

A bit more work to fit, but user adjustable, looks rather good

If anybody knows TRISPEEDFD3S he has the apexi exhaust on his car. He sent me a video clip and the exhaust sounded really good. So hopefully he can post the clip.

ARMAN 10-12-06 11:16 PM

Anyone using an ECV? The one scuttlerx mentioned or anything like it? How does it perform?

aoc007 10-19-06 10:52 PM

I got my pair of ATS's and installed them today, seems to quiet it down a whole lot but when i floor it I'm not sure if it as loud as before like they state, I'll have to do a back to back test. And only a dyno would prove that my power is the same, however it does seem to pull just as hard.

Aeka GSR 10-19-06 11:09 PM

I use it for daily driving. Peak HP on stock twins is the same, but right after peak hp the power drops off real quick as opposed to a fully open 3" exhaust with no cat.

I would suggest making it easy to take off for any real spirited driving.

So do you have dynos before and after you put it on? Heres mine before I put it on, other mods are still the same:

ARMAN 10-20-06 12:03 AM

I rolled my car 4 times on the weekend. :(

only that software program that calculates hp through datalogit logs. Its not accurate for hp but it does very well with a side by side analasis if you use the same road. I dont have any logs right now and my car currently is in a thousand peices.

Wow, I think this is where the thread turns in to a trainwreak. I'll start by calling you an idiot. I only hope you are joking.

Damn man I dunno about Australia but in the US I heard they throw you in jail for runnin! Good luck on that one, hope the FD can be repaired too.

Hmmmm... wow is all I can say.

Maximum 10-20-06 01:41 AM

Yeah that's brilliant. Clearly it's the cops' fault for not knowing when to stop chasing the likes of you...

ARMAN 10-20-06 02:11 AM

This is the second FD Ive totaled... but the cops did one thing wrong which goes in my favour, the last chase, they chased me with no siren or lights and thats againts regulations so well see how it goes, and as for you mr aeka gsr u dont know the circumstances so dont throw remarks like that, I wasnt looking for trouble, the FD cannot be repaired but I have another mint rolling body in my garage, hopefuli this one will last.

prescription 7 10-20-06 12:25 PM

dude, thats nuts! A real car chase! too bad you got messed up.

Darwin, where are you?

edwin-82/rx7 10-20-06 02:04 PM

^^ Good call. I thought about this one when I had a zx6r... run from the cops and maybe die, or take a ticket for doing something I shouldn't have been doing in the first place. It's a tough one.

^Huh?? Do you have the silencer on the car? Same one listed in the thread title? I'm most likely going to buy this one and see how it performs as well.

ATS interest

I am also interested in the Apexi ATS, so any info would be helpful..

fendamonky 11-05-06 11:59 AM

^ ditto..

I'll be moving to England with my FD later this winter. From what I have heard the only real restrictions they place on vehicles is in relation to noise level. If your car is too loud they won't even let it leave the boat (so I have been told)...

Does anybody (with an ATS installed) know how many db they reduce your exhaust noise by? I wish I knew off the top of my head what the legal db limit was in the U.K...

Currently my exhaust system is stock, but I plan on having a DP, MP and N1 duals before I ship my car.

Yeah thanks to these other people for hijacking my thread :squint:

But I did get the ATS on my car, its MUCH quieter now (Dual N1s is a loud cat-back) even at WOT its quieter which makes me think that its losing HP, although I dont have any dynos with the silencer on I've seen graphs for other cars where they didn't lose any power with it on.

I think I read its supposed to be 7DB, but if you're getting a MP and N1 duals I'd say to keep it quiet definitely get a resonated MP and a pair of the ATS silencers.

Why dont you have the car equiped with the stock exhaust when it gets on the boat then just swap the aftermarket parts back on when you get over there?

thewird 11-05-06 12:33 PM

Does this have any effect if you still have the cat on? My mechanic says silencers won't have an effect if you still have the cat on. Is this true? He's a rotary specialist mechanic.

I have downpipe, stock cat, and dual n1 cat-back, with the silencers on it is MUCH quieter, although dual n1s are a loud cat-back.

Because that would be smart.

Yeah, that would be a good idea though. :D

Is it much quieter at WOT or just slightly? Can you even remember?

If the hp loss isn't signficant I'm definitely going to pick one of these up. I don't need cops giving me more attention than I already get. Besides, when I get pulled over it's usually multiple tickets I get slapped with  .

Edit: I HATE thread jackers.

Ottoman 11-05-06 03:34 PM

My buddy has one on his R33 GT-R... he runs a 4" straight through exhaust.. which is loud and resonates like hell...

After putting the ATS on.. the idle is a bloody whisper and WOT is just "sporty" sounding...

as for performance.. u can deffinately feel the car is choking some.. but it's not as bad as sticking a potato in the car... since it does vary it's flow and all..

I'm seriously considering picking up one myself... i don't care that much about the power loss... its only held by 1 bolt anyways.. I wouldn't be stupid enough to try and race with one in my muffler anyway.. it's just to make the daily commute more bareable..

str8ryd 11-05-06 03:38 PM

Really, only one bolt? If that's true that's awesome news. Would make putting it in and taking it out super simple.

str8ryd 11-05-06 03:40 PM

Forgot to ask, if anyone can answer this question it would be very much appreciated:

I'm wondering what effect flames coming out the exhaust have on a silencer if any at all? I don't want to destroy the silencer if I know I'll be shooting flames. If anyone can enlighten me it would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes it seems much quieter at WOT (although the engine is still very loud) thats why it worrys me that it might be restricting power, however if you do a search you can find dynos that show no power loss with it on. The car doesn't seem to have lost any power, though.

And yes it is held on by one bold: 7mm (iirc) bolt, washer, locking washer, 10mm teflon nut and a cotter pin. I'd post pics but no camera.

So I thought about that already.
Only problem is that I will be driving on base everyday for work, so to keep the stock set-up to get into country than go wild isn't going to work, since I will have a gate guard hearing me from a mile away every day. If they get suspicious than they check my shit. If they check my stuff and it isnt legal than my driving privelages get suspended and I get into all kinds of shit (I don't know if they would go so far as to deport my car... but I really don't wanna learn the hard way)..

Yeah, I already thought about the idea of just keeping the stocker in there for the inspection (thats what I would do if I were staying in the states). Thinkin a silencer is a smarter/safer option.

Sorry for the hijacking..

the construction is quite solid actually...

the only complaint is that sometimes it get's "stuck open" and doesn't return to the closest position and the car is louder at idle... i believe that might be due to carbon gumming up the spring.. but usually another back fire pops it back into place...

perhaps a regular removal and cleaning would help prevent that... or maybe his was just an exception

aoc007 11-06-06 03:50 PM

I don't think the backfiring would damage it, they seem pretty durable, but with them on I don't seem to get as many little pops and backfires as before.

GoodfellaFD3S 11-24-06 03:08 PM

Bump for more real world experiences with this thing :)

TRISPEEDFD3S 11-24-06 03:30 PM

I think the ATS is an awesome product. I don't have it, but I do have the PS Revolution, which uses the same technology. It's pretty quiet at idle, and cruising. You don't get that annoying loud humming sound of the exhaust on the freeway either. On my cat-back, I have a tool *had to get it directly from apex-i themselves* that can adjust the sound of the exhaust. I have it open all the way, and my friend with a dp, hiflow, cb is jealous of how quiet my car is. On the ps revolution, the piping is the same size as the gt spec *3.75"*. It's to compensate for the ats system in it. SO when it's fully open, it's like a 3" exhaust. The whole reason they built the ats system, is to help cure the loss of torque you get from a free flowing 3" exhaust. I think my exhaust is awesome. Plus, how many people do you know have it?

aoc007 11-24-06 03:45 PM

Yeah its pretty quiet, sometimes I wish it was louder haha, but it does cure the annoying droning on the freeway.

rx7playa 11-24-06 04:47 PM

this may be a stupid question. well it is a stupid question, but will these work in a Greddy muffler?
