another battery relocation question...

if i cut the bottom of my passengers bin out, will there be a place for my battery to sit flush? and would it be a good idea to drill through the floor for the battery posts?

anyone done this??? pics?

thanks

Not really. you need to make sure your battery has something to strap it down and keep it bolted to the car.

Looks like 3/16 or 1/8 textured abs plastic.

i was wondering if you could bolt the battery to the floor, after the bottom of the bin has been cut out.

is there a flat area that i can tighten the battery down to? what will i be drilling through to put the battery brackets in?

or is it better just to leave the bin, and mount the battery to the bottom of it?

seems like it would be alot stronger bolted to the floor.

thanks

Im curious, the battery could be relocated to the trunk right? Like where the lug nuts and stuff are located but on the other side. I think that would be the most ideal since the bins are actually useful and you could access the battery more easily in case someone needs some juice.

Yes the cover is 1/4 black textured ABS. I cut the bottom out of each bin and removed the insulation also. Then once I had exposed metal, I drilled a hole and added a bolt, nut and washers to attach my ground to. My other bin houses a battery kill switch. 00 gauge wiring for all the main connections and 4 gauge from the distribution box. All accessories are from Streetwires. No need to strap down the battery as it is a tight fit and will not shift around. The pics shown were from my first setup using an Optima Honda sized yellow top. To make the cover, first take some cardboard and trim it to the shape of the bin. Mount your battery and press the cardboard template onto the battery terminals and cut out around the indentations. Now your ready to cut and drill your cover. Sand the edges until it fits snug and add the terminal clamps to attach the wiring. My new setup consists of a Kinetik 2000 audio competition battery, was a very tight fit.

The passenger bin is usually considered to be the best location because...

1. The lower the (physical location) weight the better for handling.
2. Shorter wire length to front has less voltage drop and is lighter.
3. Passenger side rear is lighter (fuel tank is on driver side) so better weight distribution.

Thanks for the info.

Interesting point. That kinda sucks. I really like that passenger side bin .
Maybe I wont go this route after all or just stick it in the center of the trunk.

yes iv searched, and i found a few write-ups on people relocating their battery to the passenger bin. But im yet to see someone just cut the bottom off the bin completely out, and bolt the battery right to the floor... possible?

Do you really need two bins? You could always build a tray for the hatch area and have little compartments for all of your belongings.... you know.. like...hmmm...uhhh

well, I keep my wallet in my pocket and my keys in the ignition... what else are you carrying?

Premix, oil, small bottle of coolant (premixed), extra fuses... that's what I have in my drivers side bin. (With folded up towels below in case of leaks) Although... It all may disappear soon.

Not exactly what you are talking about, but he cut holes to mount his bracket directly to the chassis.

^^Exactly, you just build (or buy) a mounting tray and bolt the tray assembly and battery to the floor. Mounting it to the plastic is a bad idea b/c (duh) its plastic...

RX72NR, I really like your setup, it is very clean although I would advise even though it is a tight fit, in case of a severe accident the plastic can (although not likely) become comprimised and turn that optima into a really cool flying brick. Not to mention if anyone is participating in track days they will not pass inspection if it is not tied down properly.

Take another look at the thread I posted earlier.

The battery is located in the bin, and the battery holder is bolted to the floor.

i see now... i guess ill just have to make something for the battery to sit on, inside of the bin just like the write-up.

im still gonna look under the bin and see if i cant just bolt the battery down to a flush part of the car. maybe i can find a slim battery box to fit down there...

There really isnt a flush part under the bin. At least not that lines up with the bin's lid.
