TO all FD owners with B&M short shifters

I have searched the archives but wanted a more "scientific" poll regarding the rattling on the short shifters........

I am looking at the Mazdaspeed, C's and B&M....

7racer 10-31-02 11:15 AM

Oh and depending on the results.....

Someone should do one for the C's and mazdaspeed :)

Plzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

VERY informative. It got me to drive down to them (granted it was only 10 miles) and buy theirs. No rattles.

I have a B&M and it doesn't rattle at all, I have a small piece of thick dynamat that I cut a hole in the center of, that keeps the tranny noise to almost nothing.. but the shifter has never once rattled on me. WELL worth the $180 or whatever it is from Summit.

woooo

that's a good page....

but I was trying to see if indeed the B&M made any difference at all or just followed the 1 out of three rule....

or worse......

say everyone in the pole has a rattle then either the shifter is slightly suspectable or everyones car, that is 3rd gens, makes it "car specific......

7racer 10-31-02 11:34 AM

thanks MJW

I'll click your response on the pole for ya:D

mjw 10-31-02 11:49 AM

No problem.. :)

That was an interesting link btw, learn something new everyday! Seriously though, there is no reason to spend $300+ on a short shifter IMO (mazdaspeed, c's etc.). The B&M is very high quality and made a big difference in the feel of the shifter.

vosko 10-31-02 12:12 PM

it depends if you have a weighted knob or not. nonweighted knob = rattles
weighted knob = no rattle....

matwey 10-31-02 12:21 PM

I had one small problem with mine, if you wanna call it a problem.... had to cut out a bit of sheetmetal in the front right corner for it to fit properly. It's never seen, so it made no difference to me. Overall, I am impressed by the shifter. I've driven in a car w/ the Mazdaspeed one and it was sweet, but not worth double the $. I have the Razo 400 knob, weighs 400 grams, great feel, soft leather.

7racer 10-31-02 01:54 PM

about the weighted knob

I had heard that that seems to make a difference,

However, I never really heard of anyone with the mazdaspeed saying there's EVER rattled at all regardless of what kind of knob that was on the shifter.....

True or no????

YayeR 10-31-02 03:29 PM

are you talking about that spinning sound? cuz if not then i didn't have any rattling in the stick or anything.

7racer 10-31-02 04:22 PM

Spinning sound?

I think that is the tranny whine?!?!?

Does anyone know???

I personally don't have a short throw as of yet and been in a 3rd with the mazdaspeed shortshifter....

SpeedracerRX7 10-31-02 04:30 PM

I voted that mine never rattled but that is not completely accurate. Mine only quit rattling after I replaced the bushing that is at the bottom of the shifter. It was cracked when I pulled it off the stock shifter and therefore needed to be replaced but it took Mazda a week to get it shipped to the dealership.

So it did rattle initially but only because of a cracked bushing.

7racer 10-31-02 04:35 PM

No Problem...

I think I saw your post before in a old thread.....

I think if I get the B&M I am gonna go to the Mazda dealer and get that $7 part that you mentioned....

That was you right??

Scrub 10-31-02 07:59 PM

what type of grease do you use on the shifter?

7racer 10-31-02 09:59 PM

to the person that voted that it never stopped

Hey to the person that voted that the rattling never stopped.......
