Air Separator Tank - Replace or Eliminate?
Has anyone had any problems with removing there air separator tank? I see M2 has an elimination kit. Will the cooling system work just as will with out a tank as with a tank? My thinking is to just replace it befor it splits. The cooling system was designed with a separator tank. Why redesign what works.
I have been searching the web for an aluminum air separator tank and only found 2. 1 at RX7.com for $150 and 1 at CorkSport.com for $221.
Does anyone know of any others? If I going to kept the tank, I would like an unpainted aluminum tank.
Thanks in advance for your help.

My advice replace it!
As you will find out its one of those debateable topics. I opted to replace cuz of what someone else said a few months ago. Mazda had to have a reason to have it there, right? Altho that philosophy cld be wrong tho soooo its up to you.

Eliminate it. Mine has been removed for over two years without any problems as has many of my friends cars. And we live in Houston.
As for those who say keep it because Mada put it there for a reason.
That logic is full of crap, and you know it if you know your car. Just look at other things Mazda screwed up on the car.
Inadequate radiator size.
Poor temperature/fan control for cooling.
Undersize IC.
An air filter system that robs the IC of cooling air at low speeds.
Over complex turbo control system.
Using underrated fuel, cooling, and control systems hoses.
Fuel filter placed where only a rat can get to it.
Need I go on!

If you decide to replace, do it early. I replaced mine when the seam started to show corrosion. The last thing you want to do is have it split and dump all of your coolant on the freeway.
As for whether to eliminate or not, I agree with both of the two main points people bring up: "Mazda wouldn't have put it there without reason" and "Mazda screwed up in other things, why not this?" I replaced mine with a Pettit aluminum and still find air at the filler neck. I personally went stupid and decided to put a new one in. If I upgrade the IC, I'll switch to the other camp.

How do you love it ? What does it do for you ?
The elimination has NEVER had any issues. My METAL ast has popped a seam before!
I just dont see it being possible to love it.. It makes NO difference on water temp nor hp nor gas milage...
I am a metal can owner and i say KILL IT

- I never experienced and never heard of anyone having problems eliminating the AST.
- Yes, the cooling system will work just as well with the tank off or on. There is no difference. Why spend extra money on replacing the AST when you can spend half the amount of money just by eliminating the unit. It will also clear up your engine compartment a little bit and you never have to worry about it again.
ELiminate IT!!!!! I hit a pot hole and the nipple broke off so it was leaking antifreeze!!!! luckedly I caught it right away, but could you imagine if I didin't and I had a long trip to take, my car sould have overheated and probably melted the seals. No problems since Len eliminated mine.
Replace with metal tank or eliminate it. Those are your only two safe choices.
The only thing you *don't* want to is stay with the stock one. Waiting until it blows (and it will) will be a mess at the very least...

You can take this for what its worth, everyone has an opinion on this.
I know some people say Mazda did alot of other crazy stuff to the car why not this too. Most of that other crazy stuff was in my opinion to either save money or for polution requirements here in the states.
The elimination kit is nothing more than the old Turbo II setup. Its the same setup that the 7 has before the 3rd Gen. Mazda felt the need to abandoned that set up and pay more money for this new set up. Why I dont know. The point made about the ast system holding more coolant is a good point (to me anyway) and is the main reason I kept the ast set up by buying a Pettit.
Either way is better than staying with the stock that WILL split and probably tear up you motor.
just my .02

I have the Rotary Performance AST (rx7.com) and I asked Rick at Rick's Rotary about it. He said he has never seen a stock plastic AST split during street use. He said that he has seen them leaking but never a split (he said he has seen splits during racing, however).
So I ask, how many people here have actually had their stock AST split during street driving?

Dpn't know if this matters, but my cooling system used to gurgle like crazy during shutdown heatsoak for about 20 minutes. You could feel the thumping in the hoses as coolant flowed back into the AST and reservoir. After I installed the pettit, all is quiet except for heat contraction ticking. Maybe I just burped it really well, or the AST cap has a higher PSI rating.

i just added an aluminum AST.. i just polished it to add a little zing to the engine bay.. i really have no opinion on this topic there's probably nothing wrong with getting rid of it.. but it dosent kill to have one either.. just go with what you feel comfortable with
