ack! something is wrong - help please!!!!

I think something is wrong with my 1st turbo. Starting on Sunday night when I was driving home, my FD started making an odd noise. in 2nd, 3rd etc. there is a wooshing noise from 2500 to 4000ish RPM. (sounds like a fan running hard) It only comes on when I am accelerating pretty hard, not when I rev it for ***** & grins or when I downshift....

I am pretty confused... is something wrong? am I being paranoid? should I take it to the dealership and have it looked at? is this a boost leak? (I know I need to install a boost & temp guage, but job situation is tight atm)

any opinions would be appreciated

what I have:
93 FD with 44k miles
apexi intake & RB CB are only mods

Sounds like a coupling on one of the turbo pipes let go. There's 5 spots to check.. At the intake elbow, the top and the bottom of the intercooler, the end of the crossover tube, and between the crossover tube & the y pipe. The last one's a pain to check and you may not be able to actually see the problem without pulling it off. You should be able to replace the hose with some 2.75" ID hose and be back in business.

CHeck the IC hoses(the rubber accordian looking hoses) and I bet you'll find a nice big tear in them. If not try the Y pipe coupling. With the y pipe coupling you have to take it off to check it. You wont see anything with it on. Id take the IC off too to make sure its not torn. I found my leak to be the IC hose that had a 4" tear in it just by feeling around.

Y pipe

I had the same thing happen a few weeks ago. The stock brackets don't hold the y-pipe to well. Look into upgrading the brackets and that should fix it.

I can take a pic but I dont know how to post it.

Ok this is your IC hoses:
1: Open your hood and dont scream!
2: Find the mazda badge on your front bumper and go forward(a little to your right actually) till you come across a little radiator looking thingy with a big rubber acordian hose going to it and coming off it.

These are your IC(Inter cooling) hoses and IC, they tend to rip.

3: Feel around the IC hoses and make sure there are no tears in it.

Now the y pipe,

I cant explain in detail but I know where its at just never needed to fool with it.

1: Look at the big grey claw looking thingy by the firewall on top of the whole engine(Intake Manifold)
2: Take a left right before the intake manifold. If you look around the hoses you will see a Y shape pipe(thats the y-pipe) Theres usually a black plastic thing connected to it on top(very visible), THAT gasket that connects the 2 together might be cracked. Thats the second thing you need to look at. You will have to disconect it and take it off and stretch it a little bit to see cracks, if you dont then its fine and its probably a hose somewhere.

Now that you have a starting point go ahead and try it.
Dont be scared of the rotary, its your friend. Remeber EVERYTHING CAN BE FIXED!

Street King - you were right on... I took off the hoses you recomended and inspected them... the noise is still there, but diminished, so I figure I missed the leak, but it has to be one of the hoses I played with, cause the noise level is down.

am I damaging my car with this? I wouldn't think so....

thanks again

Damage might not be an accurate word, but you're definitely overworking the turbos. If the leak/hole is large enough to bleed enough of the boost, you can definitely over-spin the turbos... I believe this can result in a variety of problems.. Not sure exactly what, but I know enough to know that it's not a good idea.

Betcha, its the Ypipe coupling connection.

Looking into the engine bay, from front of car.
Follow the Intercooler Piping (bottom tube)
to the LEFT of the Upper Intake Manifold.
This tube goes down and connects to a Ypipe
that is held with a Coupling and 2 Screw clamps.
BET thats where the leak is or Leaking Under boost.
WHen Car is not under boost, it looks fine , car idles fine
but as soon as you get some PSI, it'll leak and scream
like a canary. Best thing to do is Buy a New coupler
(reinforced Rubber connection) and use 2 CONSTANT
Torque clamps and never worry about it again..

Good luck
