Mr rx-7 tt 06-28-06 06:02 PM

Sorry to hear about your car but I am glad you are ok. The car can be replaced, you cannot.

I would bet a fuel hose burst or the fuel pulsation dampner started leaking.

KaiFD3S 06-28-06 06:03 PM

did you have a fire extinguisher with you...sorry for your loss....that is one of my worst fears...

x X CLoud X x 06-28-06 06:04 PM

oman..... that sucks........ sorry for the lost.... least u made it out

RX7Wishing 06-28-06 06:05 PM

Possible.. The car basicly exploded.. The force of the explosion was enough to snap my carbon fiber hood in half and put a crack in the windsheild.. SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME!...

I spoke with my insurance company. The said it would be covered under my comprehensive coverage and they waved the 500 deductable because it was fire dmg. I have yet to speak with the guy who determines the damage to the car... But looking at the car i know for a fact its a total lose.. :T

prrex4ever 06-28-06 06:05 PM

That sucks bigtime. Sorry about your lost. It's good to see that your O.K.

KaiFD3S 06-28-06 06:06 PM

do you have any idea how this happened...

mibad 06-28-06 06:11 PM

That could have very well been mine last friday morning. The only difference is there was a county bus driver who stopped when they saw the smoke and handed me a fire extinguisher. My fire only lasted maybe 60 seconds total, but the horror I felt when I opened the hood and saw flames was unforgettable. I know what you're feeling and I am so sorry yours was a total loss. I will never drive without an extinguisher again. Hopefully the pics of your loss will shock other owners into getting one as well.

tamers1 06-28-06 06:17 PM

:( oh brother. I am soo sorry for your loss and the loss of an FD. I couldn't imagine.

Montego 06-28-06 06:19 PM

Sorry man. Unfortunately I share your pain. My first FD cought on fire also.

If you ever find out why it cought on fire let us know

1QWIK7 06-28-06 06:35 PM

O shit!!

Sorry man, i hate seeing threads like this. But im glad you are ok, i hope someday you get another FD again if you're planning to.

But what do you think caused it? Have you done any engine work/maintenance recently? Maybe a hose came loose or basically just old parts wearing out?

yuichiror 06-28-06 06:38 PM

Damn that sucks! Glad you're ok though. Where did it happen?

gainer_reniag 06-28-06 06:52 PM

oh snap

mibad 06-28-06 06:53 PM

Ray at Malloy told me they redesigned the hose that runs from the fuel rail to the primary injectors in 94. They have a kit to repair that part of the fuel system that's 70 bucks. He also told me to replace the FPD as it is "a fire waiting to happen." So if you own a 93 you might want to consider this as a "reliability upgrade." It's a hell of a lot more important than any other reliability upgrades.

Aeka GSR 06-28-06 07:08 PM

Every fire thread makes me sick to my stomach...im thinking of running complete teflon steel braided lines with AN fittings.

Did mazda ever re-design the FPD or is just one of those things that need to be replaced every 30k or so?

RE-Amemiya 06-28-06 07:27 PM

HOLY SH*T!!

Things like that make me feel really bad for the owners, like the fire that destroyed 16 or whatever at the shop a few months ago.

Best of luck with the insurance and trying to find another one.

rx7goomba 06-28-06 07:35 PM

Hopefully insurance will be able to help you out. Sorry for your loss.

ArmitageGVR4 06-28-06 07:41 PM

Has anyone ever considered that this problem with 93's spontaneously combusting is a design flaw and that there should be a recall for it? Seriously, I think there are enough people on this forum alone that have had their FDs burn to the ground that a class action suit wouldn't be far fetched.

Nghtstlkr7 06-28-06 07:47 PM

im talking to Ray tomorrow and im gonna make it a point to buy an extinguisher. good to know youre ok. i cant imagine losing my car that way, but it seems to be a very real possibility. may she rest in peace.

ArmitageGVR4 has a good point... ive seen what mustve been at least four "fire" threads within the past six months.

allrotor93 06-28-06 07:51 PM

just make sure you fix the fuel leak recall

Tenacious 06-28-06 07:53 PM

><

buy a halon fire extinguisher, dont go with the cheap home-depot or pep boys special, Halon is basically a refridgerant, its production was made illegal, but ppl recycle old halon extinguishers. Once the halon hits the air it kills all all oxygen in the air around it(its perfectly safe outdoors). Imosafe anywhere just as long as your not blowing up 25 tanks in a room. Theres a couple threads on it. Btw it leaves no residue!! which is a +!!

RX7Wishing 06-28-06 08:00 PM

I used a fire extinguisher. But the fire was so intense it did nothing. Im serious. I used the small home depot ones. I had it mounted near the pass floor board... Peice of shit lasted for all of 5 seconds.

luiml73 06-28-06 08:00 PM

I don't get it. In your sig, the thread says it was sold?

RX7Wishing 06-28-06 08:03 PM

It was sold. guy backed down.. said he couldnt afford the insurance.... good thing he didnt go through with it huh...

luiml73 06-28-06 08:09 PM

Sorry for the loss dude.

I just got my Gegs catalog in the mail, and I saw a fire extinguisher on the back page. I'm going to Gegs.com right now and by one.

Stanello 06-28-06 08:17 PM

Wow man. Very sorry for your loss. :(

ALNY93R1 06-28-06 08:24 PM

Damn, I'm sorry for your loss. Thank god no one got injured.

Damn I need to get one of those halcyon ones...

The Driver 06-28-06 08:46 PM

So sorry for your loss man... You can never truly replace an fd once it's gone even if you buy a faster one...

RaPtOr-T 06-28-06 08:54 PM

Thats no good....good thing your ok. If your car is to you like mine is to me you might as well have just had a family member die, really sorry to hear about your lose man. Hope you can get everything back on track!

Terrh 06-28-06 08:55 PM

omg.

sorry to hear about your loss!

I had a (small) engine fire in my 10AE and I still remember the feeling in my stomach and how fast I ran to get the extinguisher when I saw flames.

Weird that it "exploded" instead of "caught fire" I wonder how that happened, injector leak + backfire? or something.

adam c 06-28-06 08:56 PM

Glad you are OK. There are other FD's out there.

rotariesrule 06-28-06 09:13 PM

actually an explosion like you are describing could very well be the fuel pulsation dampener.

turBRO [ArTiN] 06-28-06 09:29 PM

just paying respects..... sorry man

FuseKazuki 06-28-06 09:33 PM

wow... really sorry to hear what happened... how much does your insurance cover? EVERYTHING except the 500 deductable?

at least you didnt get hurt :| that would've been alot worse

RX 4 Speed 06-28-06 09:42 PM

sorry to hear man... you can get another 7.

FDZero 06-28-06 09:46 PM

Glad to see you're okay. Can see what the insurance people say and go from there. Hope things work out the best for you.

scrubolio 06-28-06 09:51 PM

sorry man, can't even imagine how i'd feel

You mean Halon, what they use in Aircraft fire supressant systems.

Stuff can kill you.

tiger18 06-28-06 10:17 PM

I keep reading about these cars going up in flames its scaring the crap out of me,,,,can we have some info on here about why this happens,,,(why does the fuel pulsation dampener fail,,,,can it be upgraded/ removed)
also what about that recall fuel line,,,,ive checked mine and it hasnt been done ( ive compared the 2 parts on the microfinch,,, the upgraded one has a pressed end fitting rather than just a pipe clamp)...,, more info on preventive measures please.......

Doh! Yeah, that stuff.

Improved FD 06-28-06 11:35 PM

all braided fuel lines and delete the FPD

yet another mandatory upgrade on these cars, which get more rare by the day it seems

mkbvictory 06-28-06 11:38 PM

Dammm thats crazy! Sorry man!

There is a recall for this and mine suposedly had the modification done, but 4 months after I bought my car it cought on fire. Luckily I pulled into a hotel parking lot and borrowed (Took) the fire extingquisure from the lobby and put out the fire before I did any major damage.

20B3rdgen 06-29-06 12:12 AM

What do you plan to do with the burned out shell? I am looking for an FD to turn into a track car,but dont want to ruin a GOOD FD3S to do it. Since your frame is still good I would like to buy if from you.
The Insurnce Co. will give you first dibs on the shell before selling it to a scap yard (cring). Find out how much the buy back is from the Insurnce Co. and PM me if you dont what it for your self. Dont let the Insurance Co. scrap it.

BLKTOPTRVL 06-29-06 12:20 AM

My god, that's bad. Glad you are OK, hope it works out.

Is this primarily a '93 issue? Or are later gars bursting into flames too? There seem to be a lot of posts about fires, I didn't notice the model years.
