5th Gear Problem

If I am having trouble getting into 5th gear does that mean that the synchro is going bad or could it be something else. There is no grinding just trouble getting into the gear. It seems that most people who need a new 5th gear synchro have had grinding problems. Just wondering if anyone has any information on this kind of problem. Thanks.

If you've got a '93 with a VIN# lower than ~10530, then your tranny was built with the weaker 5th gear synchro. As long as its not grinding, the synchro should still be ok but be careful since its a known weak point.

Your going to do the 5th gear synchro recall yourself? I have heard it is quite a job. I am interested to see how it goes. Good luck.

Hey Ryan c, yes it's a big job I was hoping to do in two weeks but I will have to put it off later this winter or next year, The reason is because I am in the middle of buying a house and closing is by end of this month. Anyhow I was looking at the shop manual today and according to book it look like I will have to buy mazda sst tool inorder to do the job Or I can go it around it most of time I really don't use mazda sst tool. Also I won't recommend this task if u do not have the shop manual, I Have the one that mazda mechanic use at the dealer and plus all other books for the 3rd gen.
