3rd Gen Horn

Driving today, almost got side swiped by a senior in a SUV... He never saw the bright red car next to him.

Worst yet, when I layed on the horn, I could barely hear it inside my own car. Kinda sounded like it was dying a slow painful death. I'm pretty sure he never heard it either.

Good brakes saved the day...

My 2nd Gen horn however, has never sounded weak, even though my alternator seems to be in bad shape (the electricals are slow) after 200K.

I have not looked under the hoods yet, but has anyone tried swapping a FC horn into a FD?

Did it improve the sound?

KaiFD3S 03-03-05 12:26 AM

just get some air horns...I'm sure they will hear you then

tt2323 03-03-05 12:35 AM

i've had similar problems can a horn go bad?

FDNewbie 03-03-05 12:55 AM

Tim, horns can definitely go bad. I had a car in which the horn died lol. But then again, that thing barely qualified as a "car" That often happens in a serious front end collision btw. The one time that happened to a car I owned, the horn still worked, but I got more of a muffled beep than a honk lol. in general, it seems japanese cars have ridiculous sounding horns :(

oneflytrini 03-03-05 12:57 AM

My horn died, but then came back to life a couple days ago. I cant hear my own horn sometimes, but I think Ferrari horns are the queerest horns alive.

I pray that one day, I can say the same about my rev buzzer :( (lost it when the PFC went on)

Ditto, on BOTH. Glad someone agrees w/ me (on the Ferrari horn). Sounds like one of those toys I used to play w/ in preschool...

Installed a set of Piaa sport horns when I installed my 99 front bumper. They are in the stock location, but I had to trim a little of the rebar to clear.

The stock horns look like something from a Honda 90 trail bike.

akiratdk 03-03-05 05:44 AM

cool~~~my horns are shot as well.... PIAA sport horns....hmmmm very tempting.... how does it sound???

pianoprodigy 03-03-05 07:36 AM

I got my air horn from Griot's Garage. It's a Stebel 139 dB air horn. I posted some about it this thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...highlight=horn

You can buy the horn here:

http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?&SKU=77839

To be honest, it isn't quite as loud as I expected, but it's a HUGE improvement over stock and it definitely sounds different from other horns on the road which will likely get you noticed more easily.

I want the RX-8 horn! sounds good!

I just got that for Valentines day present. I installed it on my daily and I use it daily!
Its nice and loud!! I definitely recommend.

So, where did you place that on your 3rd gen??
I installed mine on my Legend coupe and I'm not considering it in my 7.

This horn sounds decent, is 138 db, and is only $14. I have had it on my car for quite a while, and it still works great.

Mine is mounted between the shock tower and the firewall on the driver's side.

I guess you don't have a cruise control?? I have to see if I could mount mine there.. Thanks for the info.. Any pics??

Correct. No cruise control. It has been gone since I purchased the car, and I think it's probably better that I don't have it so as not to allow myself to drift off too easily.

I don't have any pics yet, but you can see it (bright red) in the engine bay during this dyno vid:

M104-AMG 03-03-05 01:29 PM

IMHO, horns in the engine bay aren't as loud as horns up front.

I'd like to place horns next to the fog-lights for maximum exposure.

FWIW, the PIAA and Hella horns look like the FIAMM horns that are made in Italy. Also, the best sounds come from the two-tone horns that have a "high" pitch and "low" pitch so you both frequencies hitting your ears and FEELING it in your body.

Actually many European cars are the same.

Ferrari is almost laughable.

U see a car with HP and the width and tires to back it up.

And the horn sounds like a tweety bird and u start to laugh.

Like hearing Mike Tyson talk.

turbodrx7 03-03-05 06:10 PM

where can i get an Uooooga horn. My fd horn is fine but my friend wants one for his truck.

rx7superman 03-03-05 06:28 PM

I was thinking about getting a truck or train horn on mine. I want to make sure these people hear me coming. Don't know though yet.

I've always thought of doing that, but those foghorns are very long, and require a few other parts to work...they're not exactly just electronic. They use an air compressor I believe etc, so it's not exactly plug 'n play. Plus, believe it or not, they're not THAT loud, prob because they're not high pitched. high pitched sounds won't get drowned out over engine, exhaust, and traffic noise IMO

I was thinking of getting a Uooga horn for the FD.

It would be startling.
