Did i read this correctly? Every aftermarket intercooler, other than something with a design and dimensions like this Knight model, will require relocating the battery.
Is that true? |
The Knight Sports model plus the following SMICs all fit with the stock airbox and battery. anything larger than these will either require pod filters to make space where the airbox would be or relocation of the battery, or both.
Type ..........................W x H x T (mm) Total Surface Area Compared to Stock? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stock ........................295 x 115 x 65 = 1.0x ARC M103...................310 x 150 x 105 = 2.21x KNIGHTSPORTS...........300 x 160 x (75x2) = 3.27x GREDDY.....................295 x 190 x 100 = 2.54x BLITZ.........................280 x 140 x 102 = 1.81x RE-Amemiya................Apparently same core as Greddy = 2.54x |

The RE-Amemiya SMIC we were discussing above is the old version. It has the same core as the GReddy SMIC.
But RE-A has two new versions SMIC. (one is 1.5x bigger than stock, and one is 2x bigger) https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f9e976158b.jpg 1.5x version Can keep the stock battery https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...7d74c10d18.jpg 2.0x version Need to relocate battery, or change to smaller size battey |

Small battery!! Is that an Odyssey 680? Or one of the Lithium options out there?
|
^ Yes, Odyssey 680 is a popular one~

hi, you are very well known person, can you tell me what do i need to have in my setup in yours opinion? i currently bought 1300 secondaries rc engineering injectors,my setup is: famspeed high flow twins, street ported engine, KnightSports Super U Type II IC, denso ire027 all around , walbro single 460lph pump , hks twinspark, twin carbon clutch, feed downpipe, sard sport cat, trust backbox, also powerfc, so is it only autoexe air intake im missing? or i need to change something else? thank for your answer!sergej

If you haven't run them yet, I'd get someone to double check those famspeed twins too, there has been an instance over here of the compressor nuts not being locktited and destroying themselves in the tuning phase on the dyno. |
any thoughts on new injectors without modding fuel system, want it as much oem as possiblle

You don't mention it, hope you're not running a stock FPR with that pump. It won't have sufficient bypass capacity and even with a new reg, at that volume, it would be likely cooking the fuel anyway. |
hi, thanks for reply, i was planing to use all stock, any thought on how it needs to be done right? i was listening to marcus so from his thoughts i understood like this
|
If you wanted to retain the stock reg and chance the modified injectors, I'd be running something not far off stock pump capacity. A slight increase in boost say to a bar, maybe the 280lph pumps. If you're going to put significant boost in or running a fair amount of ethanol, the 460 might be the pump to have, but primaries, secondaries and reg would have to change IMO.
Marcus and his mate were always making outlandish claims about stock this and that back in the day - and appears they still do - but they're not tuners. Andy from Adaptronic did have tests for a few regs a few years ago, there appears to be some redirect happening now even though there's an article listed on the website, but from memory it didn't take much for the stock FD piece to go out of regulation. |
Bump. Here's mine compared to stock...

I like that a lot. That would still work with the stock intake and battery, Very Cool!
|
Are these still available? If so where? The ol google machine didn't produce much... maybe operator error
|
There's a guy in Australia making a similar type U intercooler that is available new. There's been some posts about it in the past few months.

Thanks

I'm no engineer and I have absolutely no data to prove my point, but it seems like the Blitz SMIC is just as thick and much less complicated. A simple, thick core that flows well and mounts up to stock everything, including the crossover duct.
Cali smog stealthy and I don't see how the KS with those bends and U turns could cool/flow any better. |
The KnightSport one should still be available.

Just your normal 1500 dollar intercooler for a 25+ year old Mazda. :stick:

So two thinner cores with a u-turn cool better than one thick core flowing air straight through it, unimpeded?

MikeJokich on here has done a fair amount of testing between the u-type and some of the other SMIC intercoolers. There are probably many other posts, but these are the two threads I remember:
SMIC Comparisons Thermal Management The Blitz unit is not available new AFAIK, and used aftermarket intercoolers aren't exactly cheap themselves. The last few I see that were listed for sale here ranged from 500-1100 on the asking price and that pretty much tracks with what I see on ebay as well. I'm actually not sure how many single core SMICs are even still available new today. I see the Greddy still listed some places for ~1200. So new to new price comparison 1500 for the U type doesn't seem outrageous. In fact there might be a used one available on here right now for 1100 Objectively the U types will have more surface area than the single cores. I don't have a blitz to measure but I will say the cores on my knightsport are by no definition "thin". You can go down the rabbit hole on here about intercooler comparisons for days. I would say for most people any aftermarket SMIC with good ducting will meet the needs of most people. I chose the KS one because at the time there were no good used single core ones available for sale, it fit with the stock intake and battery, it came with a nice duct, and it was a high quality piece that I knew I would enjoy seeing under the hood. |
