my custom heat sheild - pictures galore :-)

for those who are interested, here are pics of the heat sheild i fabricated for my new k&n air filter setup

i did not make a back wall because i have the ram air ducting pushing fresh air in and will eventually do the engine ducting in the rear fender walls, so a back wall on the sheild would inhibit the flow

feedback is welcome

Damn, Damian is a pic posting machine today! Which is great, since I'm probably ditching my M2 intake to make something like this (need to make the ASP Medium IC sit a little more to the passenger side than the M2 box will allow). Thanks Damian.

hehehe, i am going post crazy :-)

if enough people want me to do it, i will make a donwloadable template with complete measurments of my sheild

good job

That would be sweet if you could give us all of the info to make our own.

Very nice, looks much better than the one I have on now. Now if only I knew what I was doing with metal.

skunks 03-09-03 06:29 AM

sweet. Is the rubber stuff hosing you cut a slit in which you put around the metal to protect it from cutting stuff up? I should have done that for mines. Good idea dude

Great job Damian. You did really nice work and it ended up looking very professional.

I think it would be great if you'd post a downloadable template. I was about to try manufacturing a heat sheild myself but a template would save me a LOT of time.

wow that looks awesome and looks like alot of thought and planning went into it. How long did it take you to make, designing and building, cause I need to make one of those.

vudoodoodoo 03-09-03 11:49 AM

Awsome man. Good job!

Impressive setup. Quick question about heat sheilds though. Can't the warm air from the engine still heat the intake pipes, downplaying the affect of the heat sheild at the filters?

YES, please please please...you'd save us all soooo much time.

well, i was always good in shop class :-) heheheh and do have a studio art degree (some sculpting there )hehehe

but seriously, its really easy to make the actual sheild, not easy to make the template...the most time I put in was making the template out of cardboard and trying over and over (and over) and over again to make a good shape with the right bends.

but if you have a good template, then all you need is sheetmetal and sheet metal cutters, then a few strips of that door gaurd protection stuff for teh endges to make it look nice and not cut anything

seems that could happen with any airintake setup that has metal intake pipes.... i dont know of any intake system that keeps ur pipes from gettin hot :-)

but my goal was to allow fresh air to get to the air filters (accomplished with ram air ducting from second oil cooler space) and keep the very hot radiator air from blowing right on the filters (accomplished by heat sheild)...so for me it met its goals....and as a side effect, having it pull in cold air will keep the pipes cooler than they would normaly be, i hope, who knows hehehe

took a few days, about a day and 1/2 to make the darn template, then 1/2 day to fabricate the sheild....

ill see if i can post a good template of the sheild soon...

Yes I agree. Excellent setup anyway.

Brentis 03-09-03 06:05 PM

Looks nice! Any observable intake temp drops.

damian 03-09-03 07:29 PM

dunno, still snow on the ground so its not coming out of the garage yet :-)
