My friend and I just pulled my motor last week (currently waiting for it to be rebuilt). It took us about 7 hours to pull it and strip it down to the short block, but my friend has alot of experience pulling motors (this was his first rotary).

It isnt too difficult, but listen to the advice people here give you.

i.e. Pull the ECU harness through the fire wall.

I too just pulled the engine out of my car and stripped it down to short block but it took me more like 16-20 hours. I was not in a hurry and I worked alone. I also labeled everything with masking tape and a marker. I also vidioed everything so I know how to put it back together. All the nuts and bolts went into large mailing envelopes licked shut and labled. I think that the engine is plastered with **** and the job is not for the faint of heart. My background is that I raced motercycles and always worked on them as well as working on SAABs. If this is your first engine pull give it to a pro.

The rebuilds from the dealer should run about $1700.00 to $2100.00 with a core trade in. Yes, they have stock ports, but they have new oil pump, water pump, oil pan sealed and bolted on, front cover, thermostat and thermoswitch, and flywheel. I have yet to see anyone do a rebuild for less than that.

As for parts to replace, it depends. After everything was stripped off the block, it is infinitely easier to do a tie-wrap job on the car (much easier when you have to remove the solinoid rack and the vacuum system. Check everything when you take it off. There could be broken solinoids, bad hoses, bad metering lines, oil metering pump, etc. When I had mine replaced due to O-ring failure, I had to replace a motor mount, some vacuum lines, the wiring harness was fried, the oil metering lines were shot, and most of my sensors were MELTED.

I had mine done by someone who could do two full engine swaps in a day, had my engine pulled by about 10am, and had most of the engine back together by noon. aside from some sensors that had to special ordered, it would have been in the car and tested by the end of the day. I was more than shocked that he memorized the entire vacuum system, with its connections.

Good luck

I bought a reman through Malloy Mazda in VA b/c my mechanic (Dave at KD Rotary) recommended it. Dave said the last 15 or so Malloy remans he pulled apart to port had new rotors and new rotor housings so were essentially brand new motors. It was $1750 for the short block, plus $170 shipping and with core deposit included. The motor comes with a 12 month, unlimited mileage warranty.

Their # is 888 533 3400, ask for Ray Crow.

I saw my old core after the new one was in place, and saw the front cover hadn't been taken off. Now the oil METERING pump to lube the apex seals, that came from my old block. That's the only critical pump that was taken off the old engine
