Is your exhaust TOO loud?

I for sure as hell know my car is way too loud. So I'm going to replace the 2.5" Y pipe/Sebring exhausts with the stock Turbo II y-pipe and mufflers. Wouldn't this make a noticeable difference? I'm sure some of you guys think our cars are too loud when we open them up with headers etc.

MINES NOT LOUD ENOUGH!

Mindtrain downpipe, stock cat, to a HKS 60 mm Catback isent cuttin it for me!!

Mine is so loud that it hurts your ears sometimes!
It sounds really cool when you go under an overpass!

charger- 08-01-01 02:46 PM

Mine doesn't have the pre-converter #1, and has straight pipes. Its to loud... I'm putting mufflers back on it today though.

supergoat 08-01-01 03:05 PM

I have gutted pre-cats, high flow cat, and pacesetter exhaust. It's tolerable. Not too loud and sounds great!

soul assassin 08-01-01 03:57 PM

mine is pretty loud but i like it was louder with the single set up. but now it is straight 4 in to 2 3 1/2 inch no cats or anything sounds even better when the wastegate opens! my drunk neighbor came out and try to take my keys on night since i woke him and his family up!

AE Turbo 08-01-01 04:56 PM

Here's what I'm gonna get; downpipe, stock main cat, single N1 exhaust. I think it should have a nice tone to it...

CrazyJ0ker 08-01-01 05:01 PM

My 87 TurboII has a 3" downpipe, 3" midpipe, and a custom 3" cat-back with a real straight-through muffler and it's still not that loud! No cats, no presilencers, I figured it would have been loud as fuck, but it seems like the higher I rev it the quieter it gets?? I even have a leaking exhaust manifold, I figured that would add even more exhaust noise, but someone told me that if their is an exhaust leak by the manifold then it creates turbulance which would absorb sound. No matter what I do I can't seem to make my turboII loud enough!

RXTASY1 08-01-01 05:17 PM

Get rid of the cats! That will make it loud enough for you!:D

BlackRx7 08-01-01 05:34 PM

I have a true dual exhaust with no cats the pace setter mufflers sound like shit, but when I go under a overpass or drive next to a large wall it sounds like the worlds comming to an end

BlackFC_NYC 08-01-01 05:52 PM

I want mine loud!!!!

how much louder with a gutted cat??

Love the Racing Beat

I have the full Racing Beat exhaust on my 87 NA and I think it sounds awesome. It admit it is loud but that's what put's a smile on my face :D . I have the header, presilencer.no cat's, and the RB mufflers. Still the stock intake I decided to keep that untill I get the cold air inlet headlight cover. However The NA's almost always will sound louder than the Turbo's. The turbo's some how muffle the sound a little bit compared to the NA's.

i have never heard of too loud!!!
i have dual straight pipes from the exhaust manifold with no resinators or catalic converters and shit and i have high flow stainless steel mufflers
i love the sound of my car!!!!! the sound is also good for getting ppl's attention to race u but it also likes to get the attention of the police!!

CanadianRX7 08-01-01 06:50 PM

ohyea the only thing that sucks is that u can hear the prrr of the engine. oh well!!
i wanna hear what my intake sounds like

mazdaspeed7 08-01-01 06:55 PM

RB dual outlet header, dual straight pipes all the way to the mufflers. Loud? Hell yeah, but I love it.

RX7SV 08-01-01 08:22 PM

I have only found one solution to get the right sound that I want from my exhaust. That was to just run a 3" pipe off the turbo, no mufflers or anything. I have wonderful memories of the day I did that. Obviously I reconnected the mufflers about 10mins later after driving around a bit before someone called the police. My plan is to get an external wastegate and vent that to the atmosphere. I think that that will give me the sound that I want when I am on boost but be quite enough for driving around the suburbs when off boost.

So that's your car eh? You have a camaro with a rotery in it or what? By the way, I love the fake air scoop. get the idea from the new mustangs? :D

talking about exhausts

Well, mine isn't loud enough, and I stock everything, with leaks. :) So it's loud, but not nearly loud enough. by the way. I'm looking to get everything Apexi. Do they make downpipes and midpipes? I'll get their header and dual n1 cat back. I'll yank all the cats and probably strap a presilencer in there. I'm planning on this being my second mod to my car (after the mariah mode 6 spoiler). I know the whole exhuast thing will be a pretty penny. I'm willing to spend....

i got you ALL beat...try NO exhaust!!!

thats right, ive got my exhaust off (which used to have a cut out in place of Precat #1) so i can have a race pipe bent up, and run it to a j-spec Apex N1 set up (here in america, would be coming out the driver's side)

its SO freakin loud...but man, makes a HUUUUGGE diff, i gained about 10 HP!!!...it smokes the tires NOW, w/ No more wheel hop...

Man this has been bothering me for so long! Under boost in my 87 TurboII you can hardly hear any powerful exhaust note at all and I have a 3" downpipe, 3" midpipe, and 3" custom cat-back with a true straight-through muffler, it doesnt even have baffles(you can see right through it, its fully open)! It's the closest thing I can get to having no real exhaust system at all and it's STILL not that loud. When you're under 3,000 rpm or not hitting the gas hard and just cruising at a high rpm, it sounds pretty loud, but under boost where I would expect it to be the loudest, it sounds pretty weak. I have an exhaust manifold leak which could be changing the exhaust note, but would a leaking exhaust manifold make the exhaust note quieter or louder? One guy told me it would be quieter because a leak from the exhaust manifold would create turbulance which would end up absorbing sound from the engine. Is this true? What do you guys think??

PaulC 08-02-01 07:57 AM

AE Turbo

I have the single N1 its a little loud but its not obnoxious. It does tend to drone at hyway speeds after long periods. I think you 'll like it though.

MaxRX7 08-02-01 01:08 PM

RB: headers/pre-silencer + stock: Y-pipe/mufflers = not LOUD enough !

I will be looking to replace the Y-pipe back; with a single straight pipe, to a st. thru muffler. Then maybe it will shoot flames ? :D

PaulC 08-02-01 01:40 PM

Oh yea cant forget the flames :blue:

Im seriously thinking about getting a 3" pipe made for when I go racing just unbolt the normal exhaust slap in the pipe and go then swap it out again afterwards. i saw a 80-81 (?) blowing flames out at the 1/8th mile track I go to regularly its cool shocked the crap out of everyone when they found out there wasnt a spark plug back there. :blue:

lol c'mon it can't be that bad. I saw a pic you posted. Got some nice wheels. If you want a cheap good paint job, let me know - my dad did my car labor free. All I had to pay for was the paint, clear coat, and other small stuff. In total was $150. He usually charges $200 labor. If you'd like a nice clean paint job for cheap, then let me know. I'll have my dad do it.

Oh ya, one more thing. You'd be behind us in the pic, but on the highway we'd be behind you pretty soon :D
