Wrong starter?
Wrong starter?
So i have a s4 TII engine but trying to figure out what transmission i got. I assumed it was tII as well... so ordered a starter, wrong, so sent it back and got an n/a starter. Still not right. It was closer in size but didn't line up on the trana right. Finally had my old one matched up and parts store is saying its coming up as 86-91 1.3l auto.
I tried looking around on google but no luck. I ordered that starter but still does not tell me what trans i got. I have a 5 speed.

the transmissions are easy to ID.
if you're under the car, the turbo has a flat bottom cover with ~20 bolts holding it on.
the NA transmission just has the drain plug.

the turbo starter solenoid faces the driver side and towards the ground from the starter, the n/a faces straight up, when mounted to the transmission.
reference:

this is the 5 speed turbo manual and you can see how the starter mounts and is oriented.

well yeah, they're using a computer with generic pictures and the RX7 has never had a strong aftermarket support so sometimes the books are wrong or parts are unavailable.
More Information for REMY 16898
i have run into many cases where the parts stores mix non turbo and turbo parts up, claiming to be for turbo but they are for n/a. the above starter should be for a turbo, but i have no experience ordering a turbo starter from rockauto, but the price is right... even if you choose to not bother sending the core back.
too bad you're just far enough away, i have a new set of brushes sitting right here if it's just the motor that is not functioning(which is usually the case).
in some cases there is nothing wrong with the starter, but the ignition wiring in the car is just too old and has too much resistance to pass the energy down to the solenoid. have you had the starter tested?
